The Age of Dancing

On September 20th Stephen Jarvis gave us a talk on dancing as we knew it,in the days of the Big Bands .The big names then being Joe Loss, Henry Hall and Bert Ambrose. ladies would dress up and men put on their tuxedo to enjoy a night out dancing the quickstep, waltz, foxtrot or tango. Towards the end of the century, couples increased and modern ballroom was born .Many well known singers such as Vera Lynn and Anne Shelton started their careers with the big bands .many can remember our local dance halls, the City Hall ,the Marina in Penarth ,the Capital, and Bindles in Barry. Then along came the twist and the jive introduced by Chubby Checker and couples no longer danced together and unfortunately dancing declined.

Despite being few in numbers our Harvest Thanksgiving was a great success, the auction raising over £46 towards our charity .Many thanks to Rev Jon for conducting the afternoon, and to his wife for the delicious cake his wife made us. Many thanks to Sue for organising the sales so well.

We were visited on October 4th by Martin a financial advisor who gave us an insight into how best to organise wills ,power of attorney, etc This is such a complex matter and certainly needs professional advice.

Lynne Plummer was our speaker on October 11th with her talk on Behind the scenes at the opera. We heard how it all starts, from the time when the opera company decide on an opera, then the scenery, followed by which performers ,then th costumes .The number of people involved is incredible

September Round Up

Following our annual break for the month of August,Leisure Group restarted on 6 th September when we played Bingo.

On the 13th Sept we were entertained by Dr Neville Evans, whose topic was "The street where I lived".He started his talk by saying it was from his boyhood up to the age of 13, and defined it by " Experience".

He was brought up in FforestFach, Swansea, on the road to Carmarthen. One of his interests was going to the Welfare hall, every Sunday, to watch his favourite cowboy and Indian films He then played the song "Home on the range" and we all joined in .

When he was a boy, he had always dreamt of driving a lorry, so when he was grown up, for one of his birthdays, his wife contacted John Raymond's, at Bridgend and arranged for him to have a ride down the A48 in one of their largest lorries and allowed him to have a go on their own private land .Dr Evans then played "I had a dream".He had realised his dream.

His first school was only across the road from where he lived .He always wanted to be an angel ,so when they we introduced to school rules, they were told that they should do a number 2 before attending school, but were allowed a number 1 halfway through morning lessons. As a small child he couldn't understand this as he was already on number 7.

He told us he liked the headmistress, but he thought Mrs Jones was the ugliest teacher he had ever seen. What little ones think!!

Our Deputy Chairlady Shirley thanked Dr Evans.for giving us an afternoon full of laughter.

leisure_hoursLeisure Group commenced the new Autumn session on September 7th at the Community Centre with a wonderful afternoon of music from the Cardiff Live Music Club. Four gentlemen came with their keyboard. Each played us a medley which created a lot of foot tapping and singing. All agreed it was a very enjoyable afternoon.

On September 14th Mr Andrew Kelland and a colleague came to tell is of their little known charity T.W.A.M. Tools with a mission. What wonderful work these volunteers do restoring old tools and sending them to under-developed countries, mainly in Africa, where people learn the skills and are now making furniture and building houses. The women have been given restored sewing machines and are now making clothes. There is a wide range of requirements such as knitting needles, buttons, screws, nails, wool – the list is endless. I'm sure we'll all think before binning in future.
