Report from the Hub

March2025

OPENING HOURS

We are now open Monday, Tuesday and Wednes-day 10 am – 4 pm and Saturday 9 am – 1 pm.

Easter Raffle Draw: Many thanks to Clare Ellis for her generous donation of two wonderful Easter hampers, which were raffled on 4th April. The winners were: Gwyneth and Ken Hansen and Pam and Ieuan Williams. The hampers were full of M&S Easter goodies. We are very grateful for Clare’s kindness and support. Contributions like this make such a difference to the Hub and to the enjoyment of our community events.

Farewell to Phil Gauci: After 10 years as our Peripatetic Liaison with the Vale of Glamorgan, Phil accepted a post as Senior Librarian at Cowbridge Library. Phil had been with the Community Libraries since 2016 when they were first formed. On behalf of all the Team and Volunteers at Wenvoe Library, we wish him well in his new post. If you are in Cowbridge, do drop in and say hello to him.

Pop up Plant Sale: On Saturday 16 May, Clare Ellis will be holding a pop up plant sale at the library from 10am to 1pm. All proceeds will be put towards the running of the Library/Hub.

Two New Groups: We are delighted to be launching two new monthly groups at the Hub commencing this May; one for gardeners and one for book lovers. Everyone is welcome – just come along and join in.

May 5th Grow & Grub at the Hub – 1:30 p.m. 1st Tuesday of the Month. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this friendly monthly group is a chance to share ideas, tips, and inspiration. Bring along your experiences, questions, successes (and failures) and enjoy relaxed conversation with fellow gardening enthusiasts.

No formal teaching. No pressure. Just a shared love of growing things.

  • Share tips and seasonal advice
  • Swap plants, seeds, and cuttings
  • Get help with gardening problems
  • Discover new ideas for your garden

A lovely way to grow your knowledge – and your garden – together

May 26th Readers’ Circle at the Hub – 1:30 p.m. 4th Tuesday of the Month. Love reading, but prefer to choose your own books rather than follow a set book club selection? This friendly monthly group is perfect for you.

Bring along a book you’ve enjoyed (or even one you didn’t!) and share your thoughts with others. Discover new titles, hear recommendations, and enjoy relaxed conversation with fellow readers. No set book. No pressure. Just a shared love of reading.

  • Chat about what you’ve read
  • Pick up new ideas and inspiration
  • Optional book swaps

A great way to connect, discover, and enjoy reading together.

Wednesday 6th May at 3.00pm. Join us for an informal, friendly chat with your local PCSOs over a cuppa. A great opportunity to ask questions, share any concerns, and get helpful advice on community safety, scams, and staying secure.

This month we are delighted to welcome back Professor Robert Pickard, Emeritus Professor of Neurobiology at Cardiff University who is an international authority on the biology of honeybees.

In his talk “Atoms, Nutrition and Life”, Professor Pickard explores the evolution of atoms, the forty essential elements needed to create human life, and what happens to them throughout a lifetime – and beyond.

A gifted communicator, Professor Pickard’s previous talk on bees captivated a full house at the Hub. This promises to be another thought-provoking and memorable evening.

This is the final talk of the season, bringing another successful programme at the Hub to a close. We’ve had a wonderful range of speakers and subjects, and it’s been fantastic to see such strong support from the community throughout.

We’ll be taking a short summer break, but we’ll be back in the autumn with a fresh and varied programme of talks – covering history, science, local heritage and more – designed to inform, entertain and inspire. We look forward to welcoming you all again for another great season at the Hub.

Hub Trip: Hay-on-Wye on Saturday 30th May: Tickets £30 (coach only). Festival talks & events – book and pay online directly through the Hay Festival website. Depart Wenvoe (outside the Wenvoe Arms) at 8:00am. Depart Hay at 4:00 pm. Call in for further details.
