HAVE YOURSELF A STRESS-FREE CHRISTMAS

HAVE YOURSELF A STRESS-FREE CHRISTMAS

The Christmas season is almost upon us and the shops are filling with colourful decorations and enticing gifts, (as well as some rather annoyingly repetitive music!!) As wonderful as this time of year can be, the extra work for family, preparing meals, and present-buying, can all cause extra stress. It is important to take time out for ourselves to unwind. Regular exercise and relaxation practices can really help to ground you, put things in perspective and allow you to further enjoy the festive season. Looking after yourself can help you to look after others.

As the weather cools down, and the days shorten, outdoor exercises are somehow far less appealing. It is tempting to hide ourselves beneath jumpers and jackets and not bother to exercise, but the cold weather is no excuse to stop caring for our bodies.

Cold weather can worsen stiff joints and chronic aches and pains, so having a routine of gentle exercise and stretching can really help. Maintaining an exercise routine can also elevate your mood and so is the perfect antidote to chase away the winter blues that can creep in during the dark and cold winter months.

With over twenty years of teaching experience, Julia Wylie is bringing her own blend of “Stretch and Relax” classes to the Wenvoe Community Centre. Starting December 5th. Come along on Wednesday mornings at 10:00am for just over an hour of gentle stretches and guided relaxation. Designed to leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed, these classes are suitable for all levels including total beginners.

“Stretch and Relax” classes for December will be on December 5th, 12th and 19th. There will be no classes December 26th or January 2nd, and classes will resume in the New Year on January 9th.

There is no need to book; just come along. Bring an exercise mat or yoga mat if you have one, and some water to drink. (I have a few spare mats that I can lend people.)

Wishing you a very happy and stress-free holiday season!

Julia

STRETCH AND RELAX

STRETCH AND RELAX

We often forget to look after ourselves which can lead to us feeling burnt out and frustrated, and finding it difficult to manage the challenges of everyday life. Many people feel stressed, suffer from sore joints and muscles and don’t get enough sleep. Stretch and relax classes can help.

Hi, my name is Julia and I am bringing my own brand of “Stretch and Relax” classes to the Wenvoe Community Centre. I am a new resident of Wenvoe with over 20 years experience teaching In Hong Kong, the Philippines and Canada. These classes are fun and friendly and will suit all fitness levels. There is no need to book, just come along!! Classes are on Wednesdays 10:00am – 11:30am and start December 5th.

Stretch:- Regular stretching can help increase your flexibility, which is crucial for your overall health, help you to perform everyday activities with relative ease, and it can also help delay the reduced mobility that can come with aging. Being able to move a joint through its full range of motion gives you more freedom of movement.

Chronic pain often arises in places where tension is held, such as in the shoulders and lower back. When we feel tense we often clench our muscles without realizing it so taking time to stretch the muscles can release the tension and increase blood flow, relieving the knots in the muscles. Stretching also promotes circulation of blood to the brain which can lift your mood as well.

In my classes, we start with gentle warm ups and flow through a sequence of stretches to soft music.

Relax:- Many people have told me that the guided relaxation at the end of my classes is their favourite part. Practising relaxation and breathing techniques can produce significant benefits to your life and stress levels, helping you cope with difficult situations. Learning to relax and let go, for example with progressive muscle relaxation, develops an increased sense of well-being and many people have told me that the first benefit they found after my classes is that they sleep better. Guided visualisations can increase self-esteem and help with goal setting and develop a positive attitude to life.

I am a qualified yoga teacher with experience in many yoga techniques (Ashtanga, Hatha, Rudra, Sivananda, Yoga Nidra) have a degree in Social Sciences, and have studied various meditation techniques, Neuro-Linguistic programming as well as Self-hypnosis. I am very enthusiastic about what I teach. I combine what I have learned in these various disciplines to produce a class that I believe can really make a difference. I hope people will walk away feeling positive, recharged and refreshed each time.

I hope to see you at my classes! They are suitable for any fitness level, and no experience is required. Bring an exercise or yoga mat and some water to drink.

ARTES MUNDI 8

COMING SOON: ARTES MUNDI 8

From Renoir’s Blue Lady to global surveillance and drone warfare: the National Museum has it all.

The National Museum in Cardiff is well known for housing one of Europe's finest art collections, covering a period of 500 years and including one of Europe's best collections of Impressionist art. When the Rolling Stones played the Millennium Stadium recently, Mick Jagger announced to the crowd that he and Keith Richard had hired bikes for a trip to the museum to see Renoir’s Blue Lady. The pair apparently followed this with a pint of Brains and a trip to Caroline Street for curry and chips.

The National Museum does not just deal in old masters. Later this month the National Museum hosts its 8th biennial contemporary international arts exhibition, Artes Mundi 8. Admission is free and runs from 27th October 2018 to February 24th, 2019.

Artes Mundi was founded in 2002 by Welsh artist William Wilkins. The winner of the Artes Mundi Prize will take home £40,000; the largest art prize in the UK and one of the most significant in the world. The Independent newspaper has called it the best art prize in Great Britain, ‘totally eclipsing and outclassing the Turner Prize.’ BBC news went even further calling it ‘One of the leading contemporary art prizes in the world.’

The event has become increasingly popular. Previous exhibitions, based mainly at the National Museum and occasionally using smaller venues such as Chapter Arts Centre, have attracted well over 100,000 visitors. In contrast to the Turner Prize, which requires its nominees to be either born or working in Britain, artists from anywhere in the world can be nominated.

Artes Mundi is Latin for ‘arts of the world’ and as such, selected artists are united by an interest in global issues. The work exhibited is often political and can be controversial.

So what can we expect to see this year? A short-list of five internationally acclaimed artists, was selected from over 450 nominations spanning 86 countries.

Bouchra Khalili is Moroccan-French. Her video work, which focuses on political minorities, was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2016.

Anna Boghiguian is an Armenian. She is a nomadic artist, constantly moving between different cities across the globe. Her work, which has been described as both funny and frightening, investigates subjects such as war and revolution.

Otobong Nkanga is a Nigerian artist. Her work explores changes in the environment and is part of a permanent collection at the Tate Modern.

Trevor Paglen is an American who launched an artwork into orbit 2012. Paglan’s ongoing project investigates global state surveillance and the ethics of drone warfare.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul is a Thai artist whose video and feature films have won widespread recognition, including two prizes from the Cannes Film Festival. His films cover themes such as dreams, nature and Western perceptions of Asia.

September Walk

Wellies or sandals? Sun hats or bobble hats? T shirts or woolly jumpers?

These were some of the decisions the Living with Cancer Strollers had to wrestle with prior to August's monthly walk, since the weather had been unpredictable in the days before. Luckily, the sun shone, as it always seems to do on the first Thursday of the month!

The strollers welcomed some new members and for this August stroll the group ranged in age from 2 years to 80 years. We are truly inclusive! The two year olds were helped on their way, and did stop off in the park, but everyone else completed the walk around the two lakes.

Some visitors from Cairo encouraged people to remember their holidays in Egypt. Hips, knees, feet and other body parts were also topics of conversation! As you can see in the photos, lots of talking goes on with the walking!!

The cafe was a welcome resting place and a chance to refuel after all the calories burned up on the walk!

Join us in September. Cosmeston at 10:30. All ages welcome!
