Warning – Fake Mail Notifications

BEWARE FAKE ROYAL MAIL NOTIFICATIONS

PC Gareth Jordan from Dyfed Powys Police states that they have become aware of fake Royal Mail notifications being sent out via email.

The scam involves an email which claims Royal Mail has tried to deliver a parcel – and then asks you to pay £1.99 to arrange redelivery. The style of the email and the low fee makes the scam appear legitimate. The email directs you to an official-looking page where you will be asked to give away your bank details.

Do not click on the link. Forward the email to report@phishing.gov.uk (this reporting service is run by the National Cyber Security Centre and aims to take down fake websites).

Remember

  • Anybody who receives an email claiming to be from the Royal Mail must remember that they will never be asked to pay a redelivery fee.
  • Never input your bank or card information after following a link on any emails that claims it is from the Royal Mail, because it will result in your card details being stolen by criminals.
  • If you have reason to believe that you may have been tricked, it is essential that you contact your bank and cancel your card at once; additionally check your statements for any signs of unauthorised transactions.
  • If you have been the victim of a payment scam, report it to your local police.

Vandalism and Crime in Wenvoe

Since our last report in October we have been made aware of acts of vandalism and crime occurring recently in Wenvoe.

  • New park being misused by teenagers.
  • Fly tipping in various lanes throughout the area with one incident being a van dropping the rubbish out of the back door as it was driving along Walston Road.
  • St Lythans Park and The Grange have been victims to house burglary, cars broken into and theft of garden lights.
  • A car parked on Walston Road had its petrol tank drilled and drained of fuel.
  • Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas). These silver canisters have been found in many areas around the village, Twyn yr Odyn and the golf course. This seems to be quite a problem all over Wales.

 

As a general point there seems to be more use of the footpaths around Wenvoe during the pandemic. Families with children are using the paths and dog walkers are reminded to ensure their dogs are kept under control on paths.

Call for Co-ordinators in St Lythans estate

The St Lythans estate is fully established and we urgently need more Co-ordinators for the estate. The role of a Co-ordinator is not onerous and would suit a person who is prepared to help their fellow residents. You are asked to keep an eye open in your local area or street in the estate, and in the event of any unusual or suspicious activity to inform the police or the Watch Secretary.

Vandalism and Crime in Wenvoe

We have been made aware of acts of vandalism and crime occurring recently in Wenvoe.

  • Patio doors damaged while the owners were out.
  • House door handles tried at night.
  • Cars vandalised.
  • Doorstep milk stolen.
  • Garden solar lights stolen. The thief emptied a garden waste bag onto the drive and stole the bag, presumably to carry away the lights.

 

These events have been localised to The Grange and St Lythams estates. Residents in the rest of Wenvoe are advised to be alert and report anything suspicious to their Watch Co-ordinator. If you do not know the name of your Co-ordinator please contact Jackie Gauci who can help on 07876 207843.

As we can all now see we have a lovely park for the children.

However, a Watch Co-ordinator has noticed that older children, some of whom come from outside the village, are using and abusing the equipment. We recommend that should anyone see the park being misused they please call our Community Police Officer, Sion Summers, on :- 07970 008935 (he works shifts) OR call 101 .

The Police are aware of the issues and are driving past when they can.

Watch Co-ordinators were due to hold a meeting in July 2020 but this had to be cancelled due to the virus pandemic. However, they have still been alert during the last 4 months and report the following incidences.

  1. Fly tipping in various lanes around the village.

Many residents will have been on walks during the lockdown and seen rubbish dumped in our lanes. This is difficult to combat; individuals must be seen in the act and evidence produced.

  1. People jumping a fence on Port Road carrying power tools.
  1. An individual ‘checking’ a private CCTV camera in Station Road.

Residents are asked to be aware of bogus callers, particularly those wishing to enter your house.

  1. Car theft at Wenvoe Golf Club between the hours of 4:00-5:00am. CCTV images of the person have been sent to the police.

VIRUS TRACING SCAMS

How to tell if a contact tracing text is real

NHS Test and Trace might text or call you to warn you if you’ve recently been in contact with some-one who tests positive for the virus.

You can tell if it’s genuine if it includes a unique ID number. This ID number should allow you to log into the official Test and Trace website.

Instead of following any links included in the text, go to the website from your web browser and enter the ID number you’ve been given.

You could also check whether the text came from the only number dedicated to the NHS tracing service, which is 0300 013 5000. However, there are concerns it could be affected by number spoofing.

No other messaging services are being used to contact people. If you get a message like this on WhatsApp, Telegram or Facebook, for example, you can be sure it’s fake.

Be cautious and report suspicious messages

If you do receive a suspect Test and Trace message, report it to Action Fraud. The National Cyber Security Centre is also encouraging reporting phishing attempts to report@phishing.gov.uk.

Scammers are taking advantage of the pandemic in any way they can to try and steal information and money.

Be generally suspicious of any unusual or unexpected messages that ask for personal information about you or your friends and family

Neighbourhood Watch Team Proposals

The Neighbourhood Watch Team

The team are putting together a scheme where any Wenvoe resident can call for help with things like picking up shopping, collecting medicines, posting letters, or just a friendly phone chat. They will try to make a volunteer available anywhere in the village, who can be contacted easily. You should see a small form come through the door in the coming days with the name of a contact. Note that volunteers will not have medical skills, so in the event of sickness, please follow Government and NHS advice from the news.

The integrity of the Neighbourhood Watch cannot be underestimated and you are directed also to the message from Alan French on page 5.
