Focus on groups at the hub

For the next few months, we shall be highlighting the activities of the various groups who meet regularly in the Hub

Clwb Clonc – 11 am on Mondays in the Hub

Eisiau magu hyder i ddefnyddio’r iaith? Ydych chi’n siarad Cymraeg ond wedi colli’r hyder i ddefnyddio’r iaith? Neu Ydych chi’n dysgu Cymraeg ac eisiau ei defnyddio? Cyfle gwych i chi allu ymarfer y Gymraeg gyda phobl eraill sydd eisiau magu hyder i siarad Cymraeg.

Do you want to build your confidence in using the Welsh language? Do you speak Welsh but have lost the confidence to use the language? Or are you learning Welsh and want to use it? This is a great opportunity for you to be able to practice the Welsh language with other people who want to gain confidence in speaking Welsh.

Under the umbrella of the old library, our weekly Welsh conversation group first met about six years ago with the aim of enabling first-language speakers and learners at all levels to maintain and develop their confidence in conversing in Welsh. We now meet in the Hub allowing learners the opportunity to improve their Welsh language skills in a welcoming environment. We have close links with tutors and learners from the Welsh learning centre in Palmerston, Barry, who frequently attend.

This isn’t a formal class setting and although help is at hand from more experienced speakers, the ‘grammar police’ are not going to pounce on learners mistakes. It’s just a chance to converse through the medium of Welsh at one’s own level within a supportive group. We meet throughout the year at 11 am on Mondays so just turn up for a warm welcome.

To help develop your reading skills we hold a variety of Welsh language books in the Hub for adults and children, especially easy reads for learners.

The group is very enthusiastic, and plans are in hand to put on a bilingual Noson Lawen (an evening of mirth) to celebrate St David’s Day.

Some members’ comments:

  • I love Clwb Clonc, it helps with my Welsh learning enormously. The group is so supportive, and you can buy a great cup of coffee.
  • I really enjoy attending Clwb Clonc. Speaking with others has helped me to improve my Welsh. Everyone is so welcoming, and it is a great opportunity to meet others who want to speak Welsh.
  • I say go for it. A hub in a village to meet Welsh language fans. A chance to join in and enjoy a cuppa with friends.
  • Clwb Clonc is a good start to the week.
  • Great to meet so many people keen to learn/take up Welsh. Hwyl.
  • I really enjoy this group, it is friendly and supportive

• I’ve been learning Welsh for five years and attend Clwb Clonc every week. It’s very enjoyable and has positively helped my progression.

Other language groups

Building on the success of Clwb Clonc, we have been approached to host similar language conversation groups e.g., French, German, and Italian. So far, we have enough for an Italian group which we hope to commence in the Autumn. If you are interested in attending a language group, please email us or leave your details at the Hub.

A Cuppa with a Coppa at the Hub

Stephen Davies our Police Community Support Officer met up with us in July to address any policing issues we had as a community. This was a well attended group. The main message we received was that the police will remain unaware of local crimes and incidents if we fail to report them. PCSO Davies urged us to report any non-urgent incident either by phone to 101 or by leaving a message online at

https://www.south-wales.police.uk/ro/report/ describing the incident.

Next meeting 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 14th at the Hub when PCSO Davies will give a report of incidents across the whole village and take time to listen to your concerns

SUMMER ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN AT THE HUB

Summer Reading Challenge

The Reading Agency is partnering with Science Museum Group to inspire children across the country to feed their imagination over the summer holiday, with a reading challenge focused on science and innovation.

Through taking part in the Challenge, with free packs, children will be able to join six fictional ‘Gadgeteers.’ The characters use their curiosity and wonder to understand the science behind a whole range of interests from fashion and technology to cooking and music.

In conjunction with the Reading Challenge, Alina, our Schools Liaison volunteer, is organising a reading club during the summer holidays. The aim is to generate discussion and encourage children to enjoy reading on their own. The group is aimed at children aged between 8yrs and 11yrs old. All sessions are free.

There will be two sessions, both from 11.00am – 12 noon.

4th August – a getting to know you session

25th August – a time to discuss the books you read over the holidays.

Children’s entries for the Village Show on 10th September

Ukrainian Books

All volunteers at the Hub would like to welcome our new residents from the Ukraine. Unfortunately, we do not stock books in Ukrainian but if you are looking for Ukrainian reading material, the Odilo app has over 1700 titles for children and adults. You don’t have to be a library member to access the eBooks, simply create an account using your email address. Download the Odilo app for free access to the titles through a web browser: https:// ukraine.unlimitedlearning.io/

Family Jubilee Treasure Hunt

FAMILY JUBILEE TREASURE HUNT

Have you got your copy yet?

Available from The Hub

(Hub Opening Times)

The Family Jubilee Treasure Hunt is based on items to be found and discovered within the Wenvoe Community Area. It consists of photographs and questions for your whole family to seek the answers as they wander around the community during the summer months. There are special questions for children.

The closing date of the competition will be the August Bank Holiday, so there is plenty of time during the up and coming wonderful sunny days to explore the local surroundings and discover just what your local community has to offer on your own door step.

If you are uncertain of the location of local places or footpaths the Hub team will be only too willing to help you or know somebody who can assist.

The Hub is located behind the Community Centre (the Old School) in the centre of the village

Opening of Wenvoe Community Hub

Wenvoe Community Council and Wenvoe Community Library are delighted to announce that the new building housing the Wenvoe Community Hub and Library is officially open.

On May the 21st, the sun was shining on the community centre car park, the Scout cake stall was open for business, and Wenvoe villagers had gathered in force.

Craig Yates’s wonderful baritone voice accompanied by Jill Barnes on the keyboard rang out for us all to enjoy. This was the prelude to the official cutting of the ribbon by Craig. As the Hub doors opened a celebration cake appeared being cut by the four library directors, Janet Williams, Janet Tabor, Sylvia Harvey, and Alan French.

After this Mike Harvey gave us some background history to the building and the library and talked about where we are today. The village eagerly gathered to be shown round the new Hub building where they could admire the plaque to commemorate the event.

Tea and biscuits were enjoyed by all in the Community Centre; the children’s activity room was busy and full of life.

The bookmark colouring competition was won by Phoebe Tanner-Davis and a book token was presented by Sylvia and Alan.

Chatterbooks

With the success of the school visits to the Hub and Library, we are planning a Chatterbooks group for our young people during the summer holidays. Chatterbooks is a junior book club which we hope will continue to excite youngsters in the 8 – 10 year old age range about reading.

The Chatterbooks co-ordinator will suggest a theme. The young readers can bring their own books related to the theme or borrow books from the library. Around the second week of August, the group will meet up at the library to talk about the books they have read and make their recommendations.

Summer Reading Challenge

This year’s theme is Gadgeteers. The Challenge will be launched at the school towards the end of the summer term and further information about activities will be available at the library.

Storytime for the toddlers has been a joy since it started and will continue during the summer holidays on Wednesdays 9.30am – 10.30am.

THE WENVOE COMMUNITY HUB

Let us tell you what’s occurring (ref Gavin and Stacey).

  • Our community library goes from strength to strength. Since opening, we have a 9% increase in new registrations
  • Our activities already established and popular are: Clwb Clonc, Silver Foxes, Stitches, School Liaison
  • Our proposed activities are Storytime and Singalong sessions for babies and toddlers, IT sessions, genealogy sessions, language conversation sessions, a new book club and evening HUB talks. Don’t forget we are always open to ideas.
  • The cafe is well and truly open offering a range of hot drinks and a biscuit. We are continuously investigating how we can offer a wider range of goods.

Wenvoe Community Hub – Serving the Community

Since we opened the new Hub in November, we have seen substantial interest from the community resulting in a significant rise in the registration of new members, a 30% increase in volunteers and an extension to our opening hours. We have several community groups who meet in our coffee corner as well as members of the public who regularly drop in for a chat over a cuppa. We are planning further activities including evening events, Storytime for babies and toddlers and much more.

Library news re Wenvoe School

Alina, our school liaison volunteer has forged close relations between the library and Wenvoe School. Initially, the head teacher had been invited to come to see the newly opened library and for an informal chat. A few initiatives were discussed, and a short plan of action had been decided upon. As a result of this initial meeting, the headteacher and all her teaching team met in the library in March to discuss how the library could play an active part in pupils’ learning. Quite by chance the staff also had the opportunity to meet the Vale’s peripatetic librarian who contributed to the meeting.

It was noted by all who were at the meeting, that due to the pandemic, many of the pupils have had no library experience whatsoever and this needed to be addressed. With this in mind, it was decided that the school would have a regular slot for their exclusive use of the library one whole day a week. Ideas were suggested for activities for pupils in line with the school curriculum. Hopefully, these will be taken on board over time as links between the library and the school are strengthened and developed. What is important is that the first steps towards closer links have been established.

Furthermore, pupils will have access to the library’s new IT suite which includes 3 new PCs and 5 Samsung tablets not only on their designated day, but like the public may, they will be able to access them freely during the library’s open hours.

If you haven’t yet visited the Hub, please call in for a friendly welcome
