THE WENVOE COMMUNITY HUB


Let us tell you what’s occurring (ref Gavin and Stacey).

  • Our community library goes from strength to strength. Since opening, we have a 9% increase in new registrations
  • Our activities already established and popular are: Clwb Clonc, Silver Foxes, Stitches, School Liaison
  • Our proposed activities are Storytime and Singalong sessions for babies and toddlers, IT sessions, genealogy sessions, language conversation sessions, a new book club and evening HUB talks. Don’t forget we are always open to ideas.
  • The cafe is well and truly open offering a range of hot drinks and a biscuit. We are continuously investigating how we can offer a wider range of goods.
  • We have an established Liaison Committee with Wenvoe Community Council. Regular meetings with an exchange of ideas enables us to offer a seamless service for the village. Exciting times for Wenvoe.
  • Don’t forget this wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated team of volunteers. How about joining us. We look forward to welcoming you all on May the 21st 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Our volunteers will be available to show you around the new building. The official opening ceremony is at 2:30 PM. See you soon.

Wenvoe Community Hub – Serving the Community

Since we opened the new Hub in November, we have seen substantial interest from the community resulting in a significant rise in the registration of new members, a 30% increase in volunteers and an extension to our opening hours. We have several community groups who meet in our coffee corner as well as members of the public who regularly drop in for a chat over a cuppa. We are planning further activities including evening events, Storytime for babies and toddlers and much more.

Library news re Wenvoe School

Alina, our school liaison volunteer has forged close relations between the library and Wenvoe School. Initially, the head teacher had been invited to come to see the newly opened library and for an informal chat. A few initiatives were discussed, and a short plan of action had been decided upon. As a result of this initial meeting, the headteacher and all her teaching team met in the library in March to discuss how the library could play an active part in pupils’ learning. Quite by chance the staff also had the opportunity to meet the Vale’s peripatetic librarian who contributed to the meeting.

It was noted by all who were at the meeting, that due to the pandemic, many of the pupils have had no library experience whatsoever and this needed to be addressed. With this in mind, it was decided that the school would have a regular slot for their exclusive use of the library one whole day a week. Ideas were suggested for activities for pupils in line with the school curriculum. Hopefully, these will be taken on board over time as links between the library and the school are strengthened and developed. What is important is that the first steps towards closer links have been established.

Furthermore, pupils will have access to the library’s new IT suite which includes 3 new PCs and 5 Samsung tablets not only on their designated day, but like the public may, they will be able to access them freely during the library’s open hours.

Community library users can order items online from the Vale of Glamorgan catalogue. Books ordered in this way are delivered to Wenvoe, to be collected by the borrower at their convenience.

We also provide A4 and A3 photocopying and laminating at reasonable rates.

The library hub is run solely by our team of volunteers without whom our facility would not exist. We would like to extend a big thank you to the team and to the rest of the community who support us by working with us and using our facilities. Easter raffle

As in previous years, we have a wonderful Easter hamper to be raffled. Tickets are for sale in the library. The draw will take place on Easter Saturday, 16th April.

Limerick competition – National Limerick Day 12th May

Please drop your entries with your name and contact number into the library post-box by 11th May. The best Limerick on the theme of the new Library Hub will receive a bottle of Prosecco.

We have extended our opening hours to accommodate the new groups who have chosen to hold their weekly meetings in the Hub. During these times the library and the coffee area remain open to all

Clwb Clonc is going from strength to strength, Silver Foxes is already a big success, and the Stitches meeting is the place to create and learn new skills from experienced hand crafters.

National Limerick Day is set on 12th May to mark the birthday of Edward Lear, the English writer known for his works of nonsensical prose and poetry. To mark this occasion, we are holding a competition for the best Limerick on the theme of the new Library Hub. The winner will receive a bottle of Prosecco.

Available 24/7, the library comes to you. Place holds, create wish lists, and return titles easily. As well as our well-used Click and Collect service where you choose your books from the Vale catalogue and pick them up from the village library, you can access e-books, audio books, online magazines, and newspapers with your library card.

BorrowBox January New Releases

Free e-books and audio books on BorrowBox for library members.

It’s so easy to use: Install the BorrowBox app (from your app store) on your device, select your library service, activate with your library membership ID and PIN, borrow free books.

You can also access BorrowBox and other e-books from the Vale of Glamorgan libraries page. Just click on the e-Lending Library button from the menu.

You can borrow and download up to ten audiobook titles; they are loaned for up to three weeks. If the title is on loan already you will be given the option to ‘Reserve’ it.

Your Vale of Glamorgan library membership is also a subscription to thousands of popular magazines, available instantly on your tablet, smartphone, or computer. All magazines are full editions, just like the ones you’d pick up from your local newsagent. You can even subscribe to your favourite titles, so you never miss the latest issue. ANOTHER WENVOE LANDMARK EVENT:
NEW COMMUNITY LIBRARY HUB OPENS ITS DOORS
IN NOVEMBER


If you fancy some good reads as we head towards winter, a cup of coffee and a chat in the centre of the village, and a dedicated reading and activity area for children… look no further! Wenvoe Community Library is re-opening its doors – new doors, as the library now has a brand-new building in the same location behind the community centre.

Thanks to tireless efforts by the directors and volunteers to secure grants and raise funds, the library team is delighted to expand its services to the community in the form of a dynamic community hub.

Books will form the principle, but not the sole focus of the hub. The new space includes a coffee area, a new children’s space, an enhanced IT offering, and the capacity for local groups to host meetings and classes.

The community library hub continues a long tradition of reading in Wenvoe. The Church Hall, built in 1894 and stocked with popular papers and magazines supplied by Laura Jenner, was known as the Reading Room and considered the origin of the library. The Church Hall later housed a village library for many years before it moved in the 1970s to the present site behind the Community Centre.

The new library building has been built by Wenvoe Community Council, and funded by Vale of Glamorgan Council, using section 106 contributions together with a Strong Communities grant. The Community Library Hub is run and managed by volunteers and will be open as often as possible depending on the number of volunteers available. It will also be holding regular fund-raising events to cover costs to ensure the library stays open.

New Library Building and parking

The old library has been demolished and the new building is under construction. As you can see, building work is progressing and the shell is already in place.

Thank you all for your co-operation particularly the residents of Wenvoe Close and the lower part of Walston Road from refraining from parking in the road thus allowing access throughout the day for lorries and cranes carrying parts to the site.

We can’t wait to see you in a month or so in our new library hub. We still need more volunteers, so please email us at wenvoelibrary@outlook.com if you would like to join our team.

Pop-up book sales – On the second and fourth Saturday of each month, a pop-up stall selling pre-loved books, cards etc will be held on the grassed area to the front of the Community Centre from 10:30 – 12:30.

Musings from a volunteer

Famous Last Words.

I must admit, I am one of those readers who will invariably turn to the last page of a novel to read the final words before deciding whether the book is for me or not. It is true that the opening sentences of a story are important, but so are the final words. A book’s last sentence is the final detail of a plot that has been presented to the readers’ imagination; it is a last chance for a lasting impression.

Some final lines have the power to disrupt and shake our expectations. Others will provide a sense of closure or leave us with a degree of ambiguity. An effective ending anchors the story in a reader’s mind long after the book is finished. Wuthering Heights, 1984, Gone with the Wind and Jane Eyre have memorable endings.

In Wuthering Heights, the narrator is in the graveyard and…(I) lingered round them under the benign sky: watched by the moths fluttering among the heath and harebells, listened to the soft wind breathing through the grass and wondered how anyone could ever imagine unquiet slumbers for the sleepers in the quiet earth.

A gentle ending to an emotional roller-coaster of a novel. Catherine, Edgar and Heathcliff lived tragic and tempestuous lives in total and mutual disharmony. Furthermore, their turbulent lives condemned the next generation to unhappiness. Now, however, they rest in peace and the young have moved on. Unlike many Victorian novels, Wuthering Heights has no happy ending, but the author has written a peaceful and serene conclusion for her anguished characters in describing nature at peace.

1984 ends abruptly with just four words: He Loved Big Brother.

The brief, stark and very powerful sentence establishes the inevitability of the hero’s life. He had fought the system which was engulfing and diminishing his true nature; he had loved and had been loved in return; for a brief glorious moment he had been truly free. In the end it was all for nothing. The futility of his rebellion makes his bid for freedom all the more tragic. He is once more just a faceless and nameless cog in the Party’s greater plans. His self-esteem and spirit have been utterly destroyed.

Although Reader I married him is probably the most quoted, parodied, and adapted phrase in Jane Eyre, the novel actually concludes with a quotation from The Book of Revelations: Amen. Even so come, Lord Jesus.

It is not even Jane, or Rochester who quotes this, but St John somewhere in India on his deathbed. True to the majority of Victorian novels there is a happy ending – the good are rewarded and the evil have met their just deserts. God is praised for watching over the characters in the novel and guiding them to their destiny. Jane, although never overtly religious, reaches her true destiny in her marriage to Rochester. She has achieved all she has striven for.

A young woman who somehow just cannot reach her ‘true destiny’ and the reader is left with the lingering doubt that she may never do so, is Scarlett O’Hara from Gone with the Wind. On realising that Rhett Butler is walking out of her life for ever she cheers herself up with the following words: Tara. Home. I’ll go home, and I’ll think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.

Scarlett is not a likeable heroine. She is brash, self-centred, and totally heartless in her determination to achieve her own goals. The final words reveal her defiance. There is not only heartbreak, but a note of hope to rebuild what she has destroyed. In many ways she epitomises the America that emerged from the trauma of the civil war, hopeful and optimistic for a better future. But will she achieve her dream? That is something that many readers cannot agree upon.
