January Update

Our library was full of festive cheer on Saturday December 16th when our local author, Bethan Darwin, came along to draw the winning ticket for our Christmas raffle. The winner of the hamper full of festive treats was Mr Cliff Tipple. A total of 153 tickets were sold, a great result, and our thanks to go to Clare for the prize and the organisation of the raffle.

Pop-up-Sale

On Saturday 2nd December we held our first "Pop-up" sale of used books outside the Springfield Stores which was good for reducing our stock of surplus books as well as meeting plenty of people. Keep an eye out for future Pop-ups on a Saturday morning and thanks to the Stores for hosting us.

We are always grateful for donated books but in particular for recent crime and thrillers. Some have been in really good condition and relatively new that we have taken them into our lending stock rather than selling them, so if you have any "read-once" or recent books which you would like to either share or be sold to top-up our funds, we would be grateful for your donation.

Raffles and Lego

We are holding a Christmas Raffle with a bumper hamper of seasonal goodies up for grabs. Tickets are £1.00 each and available in the library; thanks to Claire Ellis for organising and donating items.

We are selling Christmas Cards with a choice of local scenes and these are £4.00 for ten. These are unique to Wenvoe and not available anywhere else; ideal for sending to former residents or those who have moved away from the village?

With the holiday season approaching we will be having more Lego sessions on Saturday mornings; these will probably be on Saturday 9th and 17th but Follow us on Facebook for details.

We have had a good clear out of books which haven’t been read in the last two years and are making space for the new stock as it begins to arrive. If you’re looking for good books to read over Christmas don’t forget you can browse the catalogue over the internet and order books from almost any public library in Wales.. CDs, DVDs and audio books are also available.

Merry Christmas, and happy reading!

Christmas Plans

As we enter the festive season the Wenvoe Library Christmas Cards are on sale at £4.00 for a pack of ten, each pack featuring one of two local scenes photographed by Roy Carr, local photographer extraordinaire. These are for sale in the library and all proceeds go towards the library funds.

There will also be a Christmas Raffle of food and drink items, tickets on sale in the library.

The Digital Drop-in sessions are proving popular with those wishing to get more understanding of how to use their lap-top, tablet or smartphone; these still need to be booked in advance and are normally on a one-to-one basis. If you are nervous about, say, joining Facebook, or using any other apps instruction will be given in how to do so safely and how to see the people you want to see without losing your privacy; and if you use Facebook you can Follow our regular page of information and celebration.

The Lego mornings were very successful over the summer holidays and it is expected that we will be running some more in December; it would be marvellous if anyone has any more Lego to donate.

Once the cards are printed the pictures will be on our Facebook page and on sale in the library during our normal opening hours.

Brenig Davies of Clos Llanfair has joined us as a new Director of the not-for-profit company set up to run the library and we welcome him to the team.

Our volunteer group is expanding slowly but any new volunteers are always welcome; we are also keen to offer the opportunity to 16 – 18 year olds doing Welsh Baccalaureate to come and volunteer. In addition any accountants in the village who could help with the annual accounts would be welcome to give the benefit of their skills.

We have started the Digital Drop-Ins for helping with lap-tops, tablets, and smartphones. You need to book these at least a week in advance for one of the two slots each Wednesday morning. The genealogy sessions on a Tuesday continue.

Facebook Update

Facebook page is working well with 20 people “Following” it. There are now book reviews as well as news of events and activities. One activity which has gone well is the Lego drop-in sessions on a Saturday morning. Children have, under supervision, created some amazing shapes and characters and enjoyed their library time, some even taking a book home at the end of the morning.

If all this talk of Facebook and smartphones seems alien then try one of our Digital drop in sessions. Details are available in the library.

We have started "Storytime" in two forms. Firstly we have opened especially for the primary school to bring pupils across to enjoy a story read by Sandra Dicks in the library; the hope is that this will continue on a regular basis over the coming years, it keeps the children engaged with reading outside the school environment. Secondly, over the summer months we have held storytelling picnics on the grass outside the library. It's not been the best weather this year but next year could be fantastic!

Spaces are available on a Tuesday morning for our Ancestry sessions, just drop in on a Tuesday or enquire next time you are passing. You don't have to be a library member to take part but will have to sign up if you wish to use your own laptop or tablet.

The new Library Management System is in place and, after a troublesome installation is working well. The on-line catalogue is broadly the same to help readers choose books at home and order them for collection as well as making renewals from home.

If you bought tourist guides over the summer then remember for next year that you could have borrowed Rough guides, Lonely Planet etc from the library. If you did buy one and don't foresee using it again yourself the why not donate it?

We are planning to sell Christmas Cards this year! From the end of September we should have competitively priced cards available in the library in packs of ten. More details next month, but it will be a special way of saying "Merry Christmas from Wenvoe"

Welcome to all new residents. If you want to join the library come down with some ID, fill out the forms and we'll have you up and running as a borrower on the day. (The library is located behind the Community Centre, the opening times can be found on page 2).

July Community Library News

Most of the news this month has been in the digital realm, which is probably a sign of the times.

We have established a Facebook (FB) site of our own which can be found on FB by searching "Wenvoe Community Library". If you would "Like" and "Follow" us then that would be great; we can issue updates and reminders on a range of library and literary topics via the FB site.

Over the last month the Vale of Glamorgan Library Service has been switching over to a new Library Management System which will be common to all public libraries in Wales by the end of the year. The switch-over hasn't been as smooth or as quick as hoped but it's all running now. The ability to find and order a book held by any library service across South Wales is a great advantage to many readers. As a reminder, library members can go on line, search for books and reserve them as well as renewing existing loans; if your account needs upgrading ask for the application form in the library which confirms you have read and understood the Vale's policy for accessing their system.

We are hoping to hold some Storytime sessions during the summer holidays. If you and your children are interested please call in the library for details.

Summer Reading Challenge

The Children's Summer Reading Challenge has started and runs until September, please bring your children to the library to join in and receive their free booklet and bookmark.

FREE “HOW TO” sessions at Wenvoe Community Library

Newydd, Communities First and Vale of Glamorgan Council are extending their digital provision throughout the Vale of Glamorgan by offering free weekly IT “HOW TO” sessions at Wenvoe Community Library.

By running the session in a 1to1 setting, and offering an unlimited number of sessions we can work specifically with the client to meet their needs at a speed that is good for them.

SO, if you have a mobile phone, a tablet or a laptop you are struggling with just bring it along and work with Scott. Who knows what new vistas will be revealed before you!

To book your session contact Wenvoe Library Tel: 02920594176 during opening hours (see first page of What’s On) OR email sylviaharvey@hotmail.co.uk

June Community Library News

June Community Library News

We have acquired a range of Lego sets and these are available for children of any age to get constructive. This has proved surprisingly popular in other library branches, and isn't confined to the Under 5's! Initially, the best time would be after school on a Wednesday when we are open 3-5pm.

We held a Plant Sale at the end of May outside the library on a Saturday morning and this raised nearly £150. Thanks to everyone who donated so many excellent plants. For example, we had two Acers and a bay tree which were donated and they went within minutes. Thanks also to all who helped particularly Claire Ellis for organising it and Mike Tucker for the sign.

The genealogy sessions which were mentioned a couple of months ago are going well. Feel free to call in on a Tuesday morning to see what's involved and book a space.

We are in active discussions about having Digital Drop-ins where external IT experts can help anyone (you don't need to be a library member) with to improve their skills with a lap-top, tablet or smartphone. The trainers say many of us have probably been given these items of technology by others and then never had the chance to learn to use them properly, let alone to their full potential.

And finally, consumer sales of e-books (for Kindles and the like) fell by 16% over the last year, according to The Guardian. The Chief Executive of The Publisher's Association said “There is generally a sense that people are now getting screen tiredness, or fatigue, from so many devices being used, watched or looked at in their week. [Printed] books provide an opportunity to step away from that.”
