Ladybirds

Ladybirds

Many of you will have noticed large numbers of ladybirds congregating on the outside of houses. These come in many different colours and patterns but they are most likely to be the one species, the Harlequin Ladybird, which, as its name suggests, has a variegated colouring.

The one in the photo is plain orange but they come with spots, blotches and stripes – some even have 19 spots. An Asian species which first arrived in Britain in 2004, they have spread rapidly and are believed to out-compete our native species. Introduced into North America it is known as the Halloween Bug where it invades houses and is now the commonest species.

December Update

o

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Our members met on November 4th for a Fish and Chip Evening, courtesy of the Fish Shop at the Murch, Dinas Powys. There were 24 members present and we all enjoyed our meal, as well as a Word Quiz. Our President entertained us with the customs and foibles of eating in the 1950s.

We have a busy December ahead with a Christmas Party on the 3rd, followed by our annual Christmas Lunch at the Wenvoe Arms on the 8th and finally a Christmas Coffee Morning on the 15th.

We intend to commence the New Year on January 6th with a sale/auction of unwanted Christmas presents and other items.

Our WI meets on the first Thursday of the month in the Wenvoe Church Hall at 7.00pm and new members are very welcome.

On behalf of all our members, I send all readers and residents best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

Janet Young ( President)

CANCER STROLLERS

Amazingly blue, cloudless skies welcomed the living with cancer strollers to Cosmeston. A new walker joined the group and was quickly catching up with a staff member from Gwenfo School who knew her children…from a long time ago!!

‘J’ joined us again and is part way through a course of chemotherapy and welcomed the chance for some fresh air and a chat. The walkers basked in bright sunshine as they drank their various beverages at the end of the walk, a highlight of the activity for many!!

Stress Buster Strollers Nov Walk

STRESS BUSTER STROLLERS

Autumn colours in the leaves in Romilly Park, were followed by grey, moody skies as the walkers made their way along the Knap promenade and through the parade gardens. Oggie, another Valeways walk leader, joined the group and shared interesting information as local landmarks were passed. History, chat, coffee, good company and cake…what more could you want on a chilly October day?

The Carer’s November Walk

.

CARERS WALK

Grey skies, black skies, blue skies, sun, wind, but no rain meant the Carers enjoyed a brisk walk around Nells Point to Jackson’s Bay and then back along the promenade. Watching a ship attempting to get inside the harbour wall was a highlight of the walk …. or was it the ice cream!!

Unfortunately, ‘A’ had to miss the walk because of his caring responsibilities, but hopefully he will manage to re-join us next month. It is not always easy to find time for yourself as a carer, but carers do need to look after their own health and wellbeing as much as possible and walking with a group is a great way to have some ‘time out’

Tucker’s Christmas Reindeer Event

.

TUCKER’S CHRISTMAS REINDEER EVENT

The local community was treated to a really lovely day on Saturday 20 November when Glenys and Mike invited everyone to spend time with friends and neighbours at their Christmas Reindeer event.

Preparations had been underway for many months and a group of volunteers worked with Mike and Glenys throughout the day to make sure that this was again a success.

Joyce Hoy was one of the first at the venue for a very important role. Assisted by Mike, she marshalled Randolph’s extended family into their positions ready to catch the eye of people who were eager to select their favourite reindeer and give them a new home. Some people were returning for a third year and wanted a special reindeer to add to their collection. Knowing all the reindeers’ individual characteristics, and understanding that need for a perfect match, Joyce was at hand to advise

Wenvoe crafters supported the event and there was an opportunity to buy good quality Christmas cards, decorations and gifts. Raffle prizes had been generously donated. Charities and local groups will all have benefitted from peoples’ kindness.

The warm and welcoming atmosphere at Venwood Drive and the appearance of Santa, unexpected at such a busy time for him, meant that people were in no hurry to leave. And, there was a very tempting variety of delicious homemade cakes to take away to have with a cuppa later.

The £1,221 raised from the sale of the reindeers, the raffle, cakes and jams will be donated to the Wenvoe Wildlife Group in order to support the many on-going projects that we read about regularly in the monthly ‘What’s On’ update.

Glenys and Mike would like to thank all of the people who supported the Christmas Reindeer Sale and made the day such a success.

A very special ‘thank you’ on behalf of the village to Glenys and Mike for hosting the Christmas Reindeer event. You created such a lovely day and the money you have helped to raise will have a lasting impact on the continued hard work of the Wildlife Group.

November Activities

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

November Activities

The team were summoned twice in November.

On November 1st the team put up the Tommy statue at the memorial.

On November 8th the team tackled the untidiness at the entrance to Clos Llanfair. During the morning, Brian tried to explain the workings of the Hadron Collider, but he had us going round in circles.

It was Gareth’s birthday and so Glenys had made a cake. Gareth himself had brought along some dubious French drink and after sampling a drop, the hedge looked like the spire of Chesterfield Church of St Mary’s!

The team will meet for the last time this year on December 13th, at the end of Walston Road by the footpath at 9.30am.

The Environment Team give up their free time to help in a small way to keep Wenvoe a nice place to live in. We would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas.
