A Dedicated Small Contingent

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

Where to start…. A small contingent set off for the cenotaph and cut back the hedge. Dedication is a big plus with this group as shown by Brian, who delayed his wild water swimming, and Ieuan, who astounded the doctors by recovering in double quick time to be ready for duty.

The main group finished off the work from last month on Pound Lane. We were assisted by Tall Tony who joined the team today. Martin went out early to clear a path for the rest of us. Gareth meanwhile kept losing his equipment in the triangle. Alan and Big John have done many tours with the working party, so nothing phases them. Ian made sure that the area was ship-shape before allowing us to go.

This eclectic team of volunteers have for years tried to make a difference by tidying up around the village. The team meets on the second Monday of each month. Wenvoe has grown a lot over the years so, even if you can’t make the days when we meet, anything you can do to help improve your surroundings will benefit everyone. Litter pickers were out in force during early August so hats off to everyone; it can be a thankless task.

Our next meeting will be on 13th Sept at 9.30. We will meet on the village green where we will prioritise what needs doing. At present our main areas of concern are footpaths leading to the playing fields, the border in front of the community centre and bamboo in the cemetery

A Lot More Work Needed

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

On a miserable July morning the team were joined by Lowri, pictured here with her dad. They set about clearing the pavement that runs down alongside the old quarry road. Lowri showing true team spirit having travelled down from London to help.

At the other end of the village team B started work on the Wenvoe triangle at the bottom of Pound Lane. Like the Bermuda triangle team members in the past have gone in there and not come out. A lot more work is needed here, so if team members could meet there on Monday 9th August at 9.30 that would be great

Community Litter Pick

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

COMMUNITY LITTER PICK

After the successful litter pick over the Easter Weekend. I am arranging another litter pick over the weekend of 24th & 25th July.

Filled bags will be collected from your home, along with your black bags on the following Friday. I will again distribute and collect pickers, gloves & bags etc.

As per the last litter pick, you can litter pick, when, where and whatever day you like, up until the Friday 30th, when bags will be collected by the VOG.

Heather (Landlady at The Horse & Jockey) has kindly offered to provide all litter pickers with a drink for half price (on production of a voucher, which I will give you when delivering the pickers/gloves etc.).

If interested in participating, please either text/what’s app me on 07724827496 or email at info@russellgodfrey.co.uk

Raring To Go

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

A lovely June morning had the group raring to go. With Martin making his debut, after we checked his birth certificate to make sure he was of a certain age as not show us up. Four of us tackled weeds in the rose border on the village green, while the others who don’t suffer from vertigo set about clearing ivy off a wall. For the second month running one of the team went missing, this time on the way from his home. We have had a quick look for Ieuan (see photo), to no avail.

Our next meeting will be on 12th July at 9.30. The teams will tackle the path leading to Greave Close via Walston Road and the triangle at the bottom of Pound Lane.

Big John Has Disappeared

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

The gregarious seven tackled an overgrown area at the top of Walston Road. One of the team found metal discarded in a hedge. There is no need to bother throwing metal away, just leave it outside your house and it will soon disappear.

We welcomed a new member, Gareth, into our midst. One of his tasks was to find big John who disappeared; he is still missing as this is being written!

Never mind, the rest of us will congregate on the village green at 9.30am on Monday 14th June.

Orchid Field Working Party

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

ORCHID FIELD WORKING PARTY

Work continues on removing the overgrown brambles at the top of the field. The two biggest piles of cut material have now been burnt and the areas left to regenerate.

The next meet will be Monday, 17th May from 9.30am. If you want to join us please bring your own tools and thorn proof gloves

A Gorgeous Spring Morning

ENVIRONMENT GROUP

On a gorgeous Spring morning, a full squad tackled the front border at the Community Centre with unbound enthusiasm, spurred on by the return of Derby John, whose wit and raconteur has been sorely missed of late. We had a gentleman come along to see if he might join us in the future. Apparently he has a lot of experience with Age concern and thinks he will fit in quite nicely.C

Our next meeting will be on Monday 10th May at 9.30am, where we shall attempt to rejuvenate the entrance to the footpath at the top end of Walston Rd. On a personal note the team make it the best hours work for me of the month.

Invasive Bamboo Defeated

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

On a lovely crisp Spring morning the gang set about the bamboo in the community cemetery. Cheered on by walkers, we soon made short work of clearing it. I believe some of the team who worked hardest had noticed how quickly the cemetery was filling up and were worried about the spaces left for internment. On Sunday 7th March a few residents did a litter pick. The efforts of people like this help to keep Wenvoe a nice place to live.

Our next meeting is on Monday 12th April at 9.30am outside the Community Centre. If you would like to be as fit as this team, then join us.

Hardy Souls Behind the Cenotaph

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

At -20C the hardy souls set about clearing the overgrowth behind the cenotaph. Terry [he who must be obeyed] Ewington came to check that social distancing was being observed. Golden retriever Bungle passed by and refused all efforts of his owner to move Bungle on until he had been smoothed. If you would like to help us and learn some of Wenvoe’s history then Ian, Ieuan and the team would love to meet you. Our next gathering will be at 9.30am on the 8th March by the phone box.

January’s Planned Work Postponed

ENVIRONMENT TEAM

January’s Planned Work Postponed

Due to the rapid increase in Covid cases, it was decided that January’s planned work would be looked at next month. Most of the current team will hopefully have had their first vaccination by then, just saying.

Next meeting on Monday 8th February on the village green, where we will discuss our ambitions for the coming months.

The team would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work done by the couple who regularly pick up the litter around the village.
