Stress Buster Strollers

STRESS BUSTER STROLLERS

From July Valeways will offer a new walk: the Stress Buster Strollers. Everyone can experience stress, resulting from an array of anxieties, for ex-ample, about family, work, money, health, retire-ment, lack of sleep, bereavement. Stress can make people feel frustrated, upset, angry or nervous and can lead to people feeling lonely, cut off and isolat-ed. In order to try to ease some of these feelings, Valeways will offer a Stress Buster stroll: a safe, guided walk by the sea and through woodlands, with a friendly, sociable group where people can chat freely. It is not a professional counselling service, just the offer of some time and space in the fresh air to hopefully provide a boost in mood and energy. The NHS encourages people with its Every Mind Matters initiative to live a healthy, active life. One of their tips is to go walking, as this activity is one proven way to relieve stress and have a positive im-pact on the way an individual can feel. If you would like to enjoy a short stroll in beautiful surroundings and hopefully enrich your mood and outlook, please come and join the Stress Buster strollers on the last Tuesday of every month, meeting at 10 30, next to the Romilly Park tennis courts.

Please Help Me Raise Funds

PLEASE HELP ME RAISE FUNDS FOR A HOMELESS CHARITY

I am taking on this challenge to raise £1000 for a homeless charity in Wales which is run by my daughter Bonnie.

Housing Justice Cymru mobilises Christian action on homelessness and housing need through love, justice, advocacy and nurture. They really do excellent work. I will make four pilgrimages to holy places this year starting with a mini pilgrimage from Llandaff Cathedral to the holy shrine and statue of Mary at Penrhys in the Rhondda. My final pilgrimage will be to some Orthodox monasteries in Greece. I aim to complete all four between June and December this year.

Please donate to this good cause. The link to my JustGiving page is

https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Alun-Davies-walks-Wales

I have pledged to raise £1000 for homelessness in Wales this year and any more will be very welcome by this charity.

My four pilgrimages will be as follows:

  • Llandaff to Penrhys – a 21 mile walk from the door of Llandaff Cathedral to the medieval shrine at Penrhys in the Rhondda valley where there is a fine statue of Mary, known as Our Lady of Penrhys.
  • The Monk’s Trod from Strata Florida to Abbey Cwm Hir – across bleak mid Wales! This is a 25-mile route linking two former Cistercian monasteries and follows the historic track used by monks, workers, merchants and officials of the Cistercian order who would walk, ride on donkeys or mules, or even travel on slow moving ox carts in dry weather.
  • St Cuthbert’s Way from Melrose to the Holy Island. This is 62 miles of varied cross-country walking from Melrose where St Cuthbert began his religious life to Lindisfarne his final resting place.
  • A week on the Holy Mount Athos in Greece clearing the pilgrim footpaths. Members of the Friends of Mount Athos meet up to clear the historic paved paths linking the 22 monasteries there.

I will be most grateful for a donation however large or small.

Best wishes

Alun Davies DL, Honorary Consul of Hungary.

Repair And Reuse Initiative For Wenvoe

REPAIR AND REUSE INITIATIVE FOR WENVOE

The Community Council has spent some time researching an inspirational project called Repair Café Wales.

We would like to share the philosophy of this project with you all and ask for your help in working towards something similar in Wenvoe

This is an extract from a document describing Repair Café Wales

“Repair cafes are events run by volunteers who fix peoples household items for free and teach the owner of the item how to repair their item as the fix is being undertaken. Over the last 30 months Repair Café Wales has

  • Helped open and support 30 repair cafes across Wales, several of which include other environmental sharing events. Since March we have had 21 requests for new repair cafes in communities across Wales
  • Welcomed 12,363 visitors to our repair cafes
  • Recruited 455 active volunteers across Wales
  • Saved local councils £50,904 in fixed items diverted from landfill over the last 18 months
  • Built a recognised digital presence with over 6,000 social media followers
  • Created a starter kit with 40+ documents to help a community start and successfully run a repair café

Over the last 18 months we have diverted approximately 16.5 tonnes of waste from landfill. Whilst we reduce waste, we also upskill people through repair to help build community resilience, we create a safe space to help people with loneliness, isolation and mental health issues and we help change people’s relationship with the items they own to better understand them, bring longevity to the item’s life and tackle our throw away society”

This is indeed a project for our current times.

To progress this we need a CHAMPION. An individual (or Individuals) who could set this on the road so that we can have such a facility in Wenvoe. We need someone with imagination, drive and initiative who could develop and lead a team of residents to support this initiative

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP? Plenty of support will be available.

Please contact any of the editors if you are interested.

Support 1st Wenvoe Scout Group

SUPPORT 1ST WENVOE SCOUT GROUP

Sadly as some of you are already aware due to Covid-19 restrictions, Cardiff and Vale Scout Post has been cancelled this year. We realise that some of you use this to spread greetings to friends as well as supporting the local Scouts. Instead we at 1st Wenvoe Scout Group rely on this fantastic fundraiser to raise more than £2000 each year to support developing #SkillsForLife for Young People in our Wenvoe community. If you usually buy stamps from us and are able to continue to support us this year, you can make a donation directly on https://www.totalgiving.co.uk/appeal/Scoutpost. We would appreciate you naming 1st Wenvoe when asked if you would like to support a particular Group. Thank you

In addition, 1st Wenvoe Scout Group is running a local fundraising campaign by selling Christmas patterned face-coverings and Christmas treats. The masks are hand made by volunteers out of cotton and come in adult and 2 small and large children’s sizes. They come in a variety of Christmas patterns. Please support us and help spread cheer by pre-ordering the face masks and baubles. Please note patterns may vary depending on available material.

Face coverings are £5 each and Christmas tree baubles filled with Smarties or Skittles are a bargain at £1 each.

Contact me at jfm@fenton-may.org /07787510179 and you will be sent information about how to pay for your order by PayPal. Once made, your item will be delivered locally. Postage can be arranged but must be paid in advance. Last orders Friday 18 December

Wenvoe Advent Windows

Wenvoe Advent Windows

We are delighted to invite you for the first time to get out and about throughout December to view the Wenvoe Advent Windows.

We are excited to tell you that 25 Wenvoe residents have volunteered to decorate a window in their home starting on 1st December at 29, Venwood Close and the Telephone Box. The windows will be lit from 5pm until 9pm each evening with an additional window added every night until all 24 windows are displayed. The final window will be at St Mary’s Church, with help from Gwenfo School. Windows may also be viewed between 27th and 30th December.
All of the windows will be numbered and can be viewed from outside the property of individual homes. They are all within the Parish boundary, mostly within walking distance. The map below indicates each participating home with a list of the addresses for you to follow. You may need a torch on 14th (4, Station Terrace) and 23rd December (5 Church Rise) where there is limited street lighting.
We hope you enjoy exploring the windows. We are very grateful to those who have generously taken part in decorating a window and inviting us to view their ‘creations’. There is no charge, however some houses may have a charity collection box. In recognition of the pandemic we ask you to keep to the social distancing rules.
Maps are displayed at 29, Venwood Close and at St. Mary’s Church. Additional maps are available at the Wenvoe Arms and the village Post Office. For further information contact Jude and Nige Billingham at judebillingham@yahoo.co.uk.
