July Community Library News

Most of the news this month has been in the digital realm, which is probably a sign of the times.

We have established a Facebook (FB) site of our own which can be found on FB by searching "Wenvoe Community Library". If you would "Like" and "Follow" us then that would be great; we can issue updates and reminders on a range of library and literary topics via the FB site.

Over the last month the Vale of Glamorgan Library Service has been switching over to a new Library Management System which will be common to all public libraries in Wales by the end of the year. The switch-over hasn't been as smooth or as quick as hoped but it's all running now. The ability to find and order a book held by any library service across South Wales is a great advantage to many readers. As a reminder, library members can go on line, search for books and reserve them as well as renewing existing loans; if your account needs upgrading ask for the application form in the library which confirms you have read and understood the Vale's policy for accessing their system.

We are hoping to hold some Storytime sessions during the summer holidays. If you and your children are interested please call in the library for details.

Summer Reading Challenge

The Children's Summer Reading Challenge has started and runs until September, please bring your children to the library to join in and receive their free booklet and bookmark.

June Community Library News

June Community Library News

We have acquired a range of Lego sets and these are available for children of any age to get constructive. This has proved surprisingly popular in other library branches, and isn't confined to the Under 5's! Initially, the best time would be after school on a Wednesday when we are open 3-5pm.

We held a Plant Sale at the end of May outside the library on a Saturday morning and this raised nearly £150. Thanks to everyone who donated so many excellent plants. For example, we had two Acers and a bay tree which were donated and they went within minutes. Thanks also to all who helped particularly Claire Ellis for organising it and Mike Tucker for the sign.

The genealogy sessions which were mentioned a couple of months ago are going well. Feel free to call in on a Tuesday morning to see what's involved and book a space.

We are in active discussions about having Digital Drop-ins where external IT experts can help anyone (you don't need to be a library member) with to improve their skills with a lap-top, tablet or smartphone. The trainers say many of us have probably been given these items of technology by others and then never had the chance to learn to use them properly, let alone to their full potential.

And finally, consumer sales of e-books (for Kindles and the like) fell by 16% over the last year, according to The Guardian. The Chief Executive of The Publisher's Association said “There is generally a sense that people are now getting screen tiredness, or fatigue, from so many devices being used, watched or looked at in their week. [Printed] books provide an opportunity to step away from that.”

Storytime at Wenvoe Community Library

Our first Storytime is on Wednesday July 5th
Wenvoe Playgroup will be joining us in the morning for Stories with Sandra and in the afternoon for More Stories with Sylvia.
This is our start, we will be extending our Storytimes to Wenvoe School and organising Summer Storytimes for 2 -5 year olds. Weather permitting we hope to utilise the grassy area at the back of the library.
We are negotiating with a group who offer Welsh Storytime, hopefully we will have some positive news soon about this.
So its all systems go on Storytime – if anyone loves reading stories pop into the library and let us know. We would love you to join us.

APPEAL FOR LEGO BRICKS AND HELP WITH LEGO BUILDING

Has anyone out there got some LEGO they have finished with, know where you can buy LEGO at a reasonable price or any other information re LEGO
We would like to offer sessions in the library for MASTER LEGO BUILDERS – any age, any skill level (we already have one thousand Duplo Bricks). We are open to offers regarding the best timing for this. As long as there is a library volunteer available the library can be opened for this activity.
LEGO sessions are offered in Penarth Library on a Saturday morning and are very well attended and successful. So come on Wenvoe, lets show them that when it comes to LEGO BUILDING we can beat off all comers.
My ability to build those diggers and helicopters was always questionable and with the rolling on of the years I think my skills are now well down the scale so CAN YOU HELP?
To contact me, Sylvia Harvey Telephone 02920 592261 or email: sylviaharvey@hotmail.co.uk
Hope to hear from yo

May Library News

From the middle of June all the libraries in the Vale will be using a new computer system which is being rolled out across the whole of Wales. It is hoped that the new system will be more reliable but also provide extra functionality; for example, it will be possible to search for a book held at any library in Wales. There's always a downside and we have been informed that the new system will not be loaded with your borrowing history; at the moment, we can tell you if you have previously read a book and send you back to look for another one. If you have found yourself being advised of this in the past you can ask for your history to be downloaded and we will be able to search that borrowing history for you in the library.

Another downside is that you will not be able to access the Library system from home for the first two weeks of June to order or renew books whilst the catalogue is being migrated across to the new system. Please bear with us!

On a happier note we are looking at opening for an extra afternoon in the week but can only do this if we have additional volunteers, If you can help on a Wednesday afternoon, that would be great. We don't want to reveal our new opening times yet, but watch this space.

The opportunity to explore your family history has been taken up by a number of people and is going well. If you would like to take part please call into the library on a Tuesday morning.

We are hoping to have "Digital Drop-ins" where an IT expert can offer hints, tips and help with lap-tops or tablets

As you come in the door to the Library you will see these books displayed opposite you.

Easter Draw Results

Warmer weather is making the library a bit busier. We held a raffle of Easter gifts, donated by Claire Ellis, Alan French and Sylvia Harvey. The tickets raised £137 and the draw was held on Easter Saturday with Colin Thomas, our supportive Chair of the Community Council donning his chain of office to dip for tickets. We have notified the winners by telephone and most came rushing around to collect their prize. Jenny Davies won the big prize (see photo). The money raised is going towards our younger users and we are buying board games and building blocks to attract them, and their parents into the library.

Last month we invited you to join Heulwen Davies on a Tuesday morning to research your family history; we've had a number of people come forward and they have already started to do their research both in the library and at home; fascinating stories are emerging!

Have you always wanted to trace your roots and learn more about your ancestors? Wenvoe Community Library is holding weekly drop-in sessions on Tuesday mornings 10:30-12:30. These are for beginners and more experienced genealogical researchers who are willing to exchange tips, strategies, and resources with others in the group in researching their family history. On-line genealogical sources are Ancestry and FindmyPast and are available to the public for in-library use during regular library hours. The library has free Wi- Fi so you are encouraged to bring your laptops/ tablets to share your research with others. A librarian will usually be at hand to cover the basics of how to begin your research, what resources are available and the basic forms and programmes you can use in your family history project. If there is sufficient interest and expertise we can schedule specific topics to be examined in more depth. We would ask for a donation to the community library of £2.00 if you attend this event.

The Easter holiday looms so we are reminding parents that the library is open at its usual times for children to borrow books, DVDs. We are happy for younger children to come into the library and read as much as they want!

We continue to have a selection of books available for purchase from our Book Sales of last year. These have made a real contribution to our being able to keep the library viable.

Don't forget our EASTER RAFFLE which will be drawn on Easter Saturday! The raffle contains a variety of goodies for the Easter weekend and there are three prizes. The draw is planned to be at 1200 and will be a mystery village VIP. We will telephone the winners as soon as the draw is made. .

There's an excellent website at www.libraries.wales. Featured at the moment is the Wales-wide project to get every child registered at their local library, particularly in Year 4. You can also link through to the Digital Library at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, which is making a wide range of archive material available on-line; for example "Welsh Newspapers Online". You can search and access over 1,100,000 pages from nearly 120 newspaper publications generally up to 1910. This also includes newspaper content that has been digitised by The Welsh Experience of World War One project.

On the Vale of Glamorgan Libraries website are various tools including guides to the e-books you can borrow and a link to a service called "Who Writes Like"; type in the name of your favourite author and it'll throw up a list of authors whose work is considered comparable and should match your taste. We have a physical copy in our reference section.

We don't have any plans for a further Book Sale but are still selling such donated books as we have, many of which have only been read once. There are also some audiobooks and DVDs to buy or borrow.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council continues to develop the Local Development Plan (LDP) and there are “Further Matters Arising Changes” (FMACs). The FMACs consultation will run from Friday 17th February until 31st March 2017 and the documents to support this process are available for inspection in Wenvoe Community Library.
