Making Steps Matter
MAKING STEPS MATTER
During the last year we were allowed and encouraged to walk. We kept fit (or in some cases got fit), often managing to greet people or make new friends at a safe distance and watched the seasons go by.
In Kenya, Florence walked 6 hours a day to collect water for her family as her previous water supply had dried up. She had managed to collect enough for cooking, and washing, until Christian Aid helped build an Earth Dam locally giving enough water for her family for her to water her crops. Rose, living elsewhere, still needs to walk to collect water with Coronavirus making this lack of reliable water more critical for the family for handwashing. Climate change for her is a matter of survival.
Every last drop is precious and this year Christian Aid’s challenge is: Together we STOP this climate crisis.
Our Local Challenge is to count our steps throughout the month of May. To keep on with our walking, whether around our neighbourhood or as far afield as the current restrictions allow. You may want to do this individually, with friends or family and get others to sponsor you for what you achieve to help women like Rose get an Earth Dam. You can set your own target, walk as far as you are able, but the challenge for those who are able is to reach 300,000 steps throughout the month.
Sponsorship can be set for a specified amount no matter how many steps are achieved. Forms are available in the Church Porch or can be picked up in Springfield Stores. Results and donations can be given to Rev Jon Ormrod or posted through the Church letter box (this will be emptied daily).

CENSUS DAY SUNDAY 21 MARCH 2021
Census 2021 is a digital-first census, people will be encouraged to respond online if they can. You will be able to complete the census using any device, including your mobile phone or tablet.
Most people will get a letter with a unique access code on it through the post. All you need to do is enter the code into the secure website and fill in the questionnaire.
There’ll be plenty of support available if you have any concerns about filling it in. If you prefer, you can still return a paper form.
You will be contacted nearer the time to let you know what you need to do.
Repair And Reuse Initiative For Wenvoe
REPAIR AND REUSE INITIATIVE FOR WENVOE
The Community Council has spent some time researching an inspirational project called Repair Café Wales.
We would like to share the philosophy of this project with you all and ask for your help in working towards something similar in Wenvoe
This is an extract from a document describing Repair Café Wales
“Repair cafes are events run by volunteers who fix peoples household items for free and teach the owner of the item how to repair their item as the fix is being undertaken. Over the last 30 months Repair Café Wales has
- Helped open and support 30 repair cafes across Wales, several of which include other environmental sharing events. Since March we have had 21 requests for new repair cafes in communities across Wales
- Welcomed 12,363 visitors to our repair cafes
- Recruited 455 active volunteers across Wales
- Saved local councils £50,904 in fixed items diverted from landfill over the last 18 months
- Built a recognised digital presence with over 6,000 social media followers
- Created a starter kit with 40+ documents to help a community start and successfully run a repair café
Over the last 18 months we have diverted approximately 16.5 tonnes of waste from landfill. Whilst we reduce waste, we also upskill people through repair to help build community resilience, we create a safe space to help people with loneliness, isolation and mental health issues and we help change people’s relationship with the items they own to better understand them, bring longevity to the item’s life and tackle our throw away society”
This is indeed a project for our current times.
To progress this we need a CHAMPION. An individual (or Individuals) who could set this on the road so that we can have such a facility in Wenvoe. We need someone with imagination, drive and initiative who could develop and lead a team of residents to support this initiative

Dancing School Still Trying to Operate

This is such a difficult and hard time for everyone and I hope you are all safe and well .
But I would just like you to know that my Dancing School is still trying to operate from the Village Hall every Saturday. Obviously we are COVID risk secure within the Government Guide lines.
We have had to shorten our classes to deep clean after each class to keep safe which is the right thing to do. Any inquiries are welcome; so please be free to enquire do not just turn up.

Wanted – Volunteers for Management
WENVOE VILLAGE HALL
Your Local Registered Charity
Due to the current virus in circulation, we have decided to cancel our Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2020. Due to the local lockdown(s) now in place, we feel that it is unsafe to meet indoors and invite everyone to an AGM who would wish to support the hall!
You may be aware that the land that the Village Hall sits on belongs to the Wenvoe Estate. Without a Management Committee the hall would be given back to the owners, to sell on and/or build upon.
We do hope that during lockdown, some of you lovely people reading this, will think of supporting your local charity, by becoming a member of its Management. We mainly look after the up-keep of the hall by meeting once a month (with the exception of August) to ensure our community can offer a great venue for many in our Village. Classes held; Badminton, Karate, Dancing and Children’s parties to mention a few (Covid permitting). Not forgetting it is the home of our local Playgroup which is also a Charity.
The Village Hall has been successful in obtaining 2 small grants to make us as Covid Safe as possible. We were also successful with a slightly larger grant from the Vale of Glamorgan to help with its up-keep for the short term, whilst some of our hirers have been unable to return safely.
The Committee would like to thank Gail for all her hard work in obtaining these grants.
We are following the latest updated Government advice. At this time only classes who support Children under 11 are able to return and meet indoors.

We are sorry to say that there will be NO ‘Christmas Raffle Draw’ for the Village Hall this year.
With the current pandemic in circulation and the loss of many jobs and businesses, we thought it only respectful that we don’t add to the burden by asking for raffle prize donations. We also thought, that as we are unable to meet or mix with people from different households, that it would be extremely difficult to sell tickets anyway.
Be aware! We hope to be back bigger and better for 2021 when we celebrate the hall’s 100th Birthday

Scout Post Cancelled
Scout Post Cancelled
Sadly I have to announce that the Cardiff and Vale Scout Post 2020 has been cancelled, due to concerns, amongst the 46 participating groups, about potential handling of money, stamps and cards and difficulties with sorting mail, while maintaining social distancing.
Thank you to our many local volunteers, stamp sellers, sorters, deliverers and organisers of this major operation.
We realise that many of you enjoy sending and receiving cards with the added bonus of supporting the local Scouts. In addition the sorting office in Wenvoe Community Centre was a social gathering of old friends. Hold on to any old stamps as they will be honoured in 2021, when we will be back.
The stamps sold via the Wenvoe Scout Group raised much need funds to help support our young people to enjoy Scouting by ensuring we could have up to date equipment. It was our main annual fund raising event and so we hope to organise some sponsored events to help brighten up the winter months in Wenvoe. So look out in What’s On for further news.
Scouts hope to restart activities in October with a mixture of outdoor and video meetings. If your child is on the waiting list they should be updated soon. More information about Scouting, which is now for boys and girls, can be found at https://www.scouts.org.uk/. In Wenvoe we have a Beavers- 6-8 years, Cubs- 8- 10 ½ years and Scouts- 10 ½ to 14 years. Explorers aged 14 to 18 years join with the Penarth District groups.
