THE VILLAGE GARDENER

Goodness Me! Where Has the Time Gone?

It’s so easy to forget about the drought that affected our gardens over the Summer, then the rain came and everything went green and the grass grew like crazy. The borders and pots put on a good early Autumn display. It doesn’t matter how much we water, natural showers bring out the best in our gardens.

Remembering the past few Summers I will be putting in more lavender and roses as they were the best performers in dry conditions. According to our weather forecasters there won’t just be the odd rainy day over the period before Christmas, we’re going to have longer spells of dry conditions then consistent rainfall. As it’s time for moving and dividing plants in the garden, it’s best to wait for rain as this will give them the best chance of survival. The dahlias have really come into their own in the last month or so and will only need to be cut back and lifted after the first frost.

The TV gardeners are telling us to scatter spring bulbs on the lawn and plant them where they land. That’s ok if you’ve got acres of grass that you don’t care about, but on a lawn which is kept neat it’s going to ruin the appearance when the bulbs have finished, and you’re left with the remnants of a short-lived display that will take ages to disappear. Just put some in pots and place them where you need them and when they are done hide them in a corner for next year.

Skimmia’s have proved to be an excellent plant for a display that lasts from early Autumn through to Spring, they particularly look good in pots.

The Village Show proved that gardeners are resilient and although some of the veg was small, it was perfectly formed. Veg judge Bernard thought that considering the weather, entrants had done well. There’s always a show off; Nicola H had a marrow that had obviously been fed steroids and Isaac, on his first attempt, impressed the judge with his giant entry. Kelly S is another who won’t be beaten. Her longest bean winner had the look of something from medieval times that had been put on a rack! Thanks to everyone for taking part.

On the vegetable plots, runner beans, which were looking drab during the Summer, really took off when the rains came and had a prolific September. To give the beans a good start next year, dig a trench and throw any waste from veg in the bottom. This will help hold the moisture in. Then the week before you plant the beans add some fresh grass clippings and cover with soil. The heat from this will give the plants a flying start.

Planting over wintering peas, broad beans, onions and garlic now will give you early crops.

Take care and happy gardening

Shady Took This Honour Seriously

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

Shady Took This Honour Seriously

On a damp Autumn morning, the team cleared the footpath on the other side of the cattle creep. Some of the team arrived late because of appointments. But as you can see, all turned out for the photo in their new camouflage outfits donated by You Can’t Catch Me.com

We were so proud that one of our team had been chosen to judge at the Village Show. Shady took this honour seriously and with strict criteria he adjudicated at the preserve table. Misspelled and wonky labels got marked down before tasting. After choosing the winner, he was aghast to find the rosette for first place was blue not red. Being from Edwardville, where the only thing blue up there is a bruise, he just couldn’t fathom it. So has resigned!

October Church News

October Church News

Greetings from the congregation at St. Mary’s to the community of Wenvoe and St. Lythan’s. If you are unable to come to church at 9.30 on Sunday, please join us online at ipcamlivecom/stmarywenvoe

We are going to visit Brecon Cathedral on October 24th. The coach will be leaving Sully at 9.15am with a pickup at Wenvoe at 9.25am. We stop for coffee/tea break at the Brecon Mountain Visitor Centre then on to Brecon for lunch (optional) at the Pilgrims Café in the cathedral grounds. The Cathedral has recently been awarded a grant of over £2 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for essential repairs and the installation of a new west entrance. It is a very interesting building with much to see when we have our guided tour with Cynthia Lewis in the afternoon.

Wenvoe 200 Club

St. Mary’s 200 Club is a great way for you to support the work of the church whilst having a bit of a flutter. Simply buy a membership number and you will be entered in our monthly prize draw for a chance to win a prize of £50 or £10. The cost of a single share is £12, and you can purchase as many as you wish. Contact Sandra or Carol for more details. Application forms are available in church and are open to church goers and the wider public alike.

As a result of the recent appeal for share renewals, there has been a favourable response, with increased take up and new people joining. Over the 20 years since the 200 Club has been going, many thousands of pounds have been raised for maintaining the fabric of the church and we wish to thank all new shareholders and those who have increased their shares. Will you be a lucky winner at the next prize draw? Having more shares means you have a better chance of being a winner.

The Chattery

The second Thursday of the month sees the Chattery meeting in the Church Hall at 10.30 am. This is a warm safe place to meet up with friends old and new, to enjoy each other’s company and to catch up with the latest family news and much else. For the sum of £2.00, coffee and biscuits, plus a FREE raffle, makes a pleasant opportunity during the coming winter months. All are welcome.

Our Fund-Raising Appeal

It is difficult to talk of money at the best of times especially when the cost of living is as high as it is. We are all affected by the increase in fuel for heating our homes, running our cars and the ever-increasing cost of putting food on our tables. In last month’s What’s On we set out the current position on St. Mary’s finances. It is good to report that there has been an increase in support from the congregation and elsewhere. St. Mary’s is a special case and needs more funding if we are to continue to provide a church which offers a mission of worship, care and mission to the community of Wenvoe and St. Lythan’s. To have a functioning church within our community, open to all for the Sunday service at 9.30am and occasionally on a Wednesday morning at 10.00am, is the aim of Vicar Lyndon and curate David and they in turn need the support of the congregation and the wider community if we are to be available for family events. We are always here in joy and sorrow; we offer hope and joy at baptisms and sorrow and consolation at the time of bereavement. Please consider how you can help us keep the building fit for purpose, that is warm and welcoming and available at any time when the need arises.

Harvest celebrations

At our Harvest Festival the emphasis this year was to use the produce from our own gardens to decorate the church as we give thanks for the bounty we receive from God’s own hands. The generous contributions to the Barry Food Bank, used in combination with lots of sunflowers, provided a suitable setting to give thanks. Many thanks for all the help received by willing helpers to prepare the church for this important service in the calendar. Harvest will be celebrated at St. Bleddian’s Church on October 11th at 3.00pm, followed by refreshments. This gem of a medieval church is not used for regular services but is always used for major events in the year and all are welcome. Our thanks to all who prepare the church for these events.

St Mary’s Autumn Quiz Night

This will be on Saturday 10th October at 7.00pm in the Church Hall. Tickets on sale in St Mary’s and St John’s at £6.00 each. Bring your own drinks and nibbles! To reserve a Team Table for 6 people, please contact Ray Harris 07976788434 or ray.harris1001@gmail.com

Upcoming Dates

Harvest Sunday St Lythans – 11th October at 3.00pm.

All Souls Service – 1st November at 2.00pm.

Bug Hotels in the School Wildlife Patch

Wenvoe Wildlife Group

Bug Hotels in the School Wildlife Patch

We are indebted to Mike and Glenys for raising £1,256 for WWG through the Village Show. Our thanks also to all who attended the event, took part by entering, the organisers and all who contributed raffle prizes. The money will go towards buying plants and trees, installing Bug Hotels and Hedgehog homes, working on school projects and paying for tools and equipment.

We have been erecting replacement Bug Hotels in the School Wildlife Patch, spreading wildflower seed and strimming back the grasses. The area around the Holland Pond has been cleared, along with the Orchards and Watercress Beds. We have two leaflets; one showing the locations of the orchards and the second covering the Upper Orchid Field. Both are available from dispensers on the notice-board by the Church Hall.

With the recent anniversary of 9/11 we can report that our White Swamp Oak, grown from acorns gathered at the 9/11 site is doing well. As it gets larger and is more robust, we will be able to publicise its location. The acorns were gathered when it was permissible but if you plan to bring back any acorns or other seeds from abroad these days it is best to check with Government websites on what is allowed.

Village Show First Prize Winners

WENVOE VILLAGE SHOW

The Village Show First Prize Winners

Mike and I would like to thank everyone who turned out and took part in the Wenvoe Village Show. It was a really good turnout considering the dismal weather forecast and wet start to the day. We so appreciated all those who entered, our generous sponsors (who made so much of a difference that we covered all our costs and have been able to buy the necessary supplies for next year’s show too), all who donated to the fabulous raffle and those who bought tickets, our brilliant volunteers who made the whole thing possible and everyone who came along to support. We would also like to thank the Community Council for allowing us the use of the Community Centre free of charge.

The total amount raised for Wenvoe Wildlife Group was £1,256 which included £38 from the gorgeous Mila’s sale of her handmade lavender bags. We are so pleased with this amount and so very grateful to all of you.

History of Walston Castle and The Grange

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

History of Walston Castle and The Grange

For our September meeting we welcomed Steve Jones who gave us an informative talk on the “History of Wenvoe”. We learned about the history of Walston Castle and The Grange and about women who had played a prominent part in Wenvoe’s past, including Gertrude Jenner, who was a prominent supporter of Women’s Rights in the latter half of the 19th century, and one of the first suffragists in Wales.

Our October 1st meeting is a change to our published programme. We will be having our “Bring a Bottle” (empty wine type!) workshop. This will be preceded by a short presentation from Charlotte from Vale DAS, our chosen charity for the year, which had to be postponed in February.

The Harvest Supper will now be a Sparkling Supper on November 5th.

Visitors are always welcome to our meetings, which are held in the Church Hall at 7.00pm on the first Thursday of the month. We will also be at the Community Engagement Day, so come along to meet us and find out more about the WI. Please ring 07881853032 for further details.

A Lovely Place to Enjoy

LIVING WITH CANCER STROLLERS

A Lovely Place to Enjoy

An Autumnal feel to the air as we strolled around Cosmeston this month. Plenty of sloe berries and blackberries to pick in the hedgerows; and numerous ducks enjoying the cooler weather on the lakes. A lovely place to enjoy the start of a new season.

Considering Tomorrow Today

Wenvoe Hops Group

We the Wenvoe Hops Group now have 17 members in the village. It wasn’t a great year for Hops, with the weather being so hot this year.

However, 7 of the members contributed to the Harvest on 12th September and the total was 8kg 600g.

Eirwen and Phil had the most with 3kg.550g and Sue Hoddell came second with nearly 3kg.

We had a get together and the group hope next year will be a better year for the hops.

Pipes has started the brew which should be ready on or around 3rd October. Our hops will become Taff Temptress Beer.

Thank you to all our members and we look forward to seeing you in Pipes soon! If you would like to learn more about Hops, please email me: sianjo@btinternet.com

Tuckers’ Victorian Christmas Fayre

TUCKER’S VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS FAYRE

Sunday 15th November
10.00am – 4.00pm

Start saving your cash for this fabulous, seasonal event which is only six weeks away! We will have our usual craft stalls which include Trevor’s gorgeous Christmas houses and ornaments, Gemma’s beautiful Christmas wreaths and garlands etc, Annette’s lovely handmade cards, Jaci’s stunning pottery work, Tuckers miscellaneous including Damson Jam by Mike and small handmade Christmas decorations, Cath’s brother’s wonderful turned wood and Wenvoe Sewing Ladies will have a table, as will the Wenvoe Wildlife Group. This year we are focusing more on children in the village and are providing traditional Victorian fairground games such as Hoopla, Bat-the-Rat, Tin Can Alley, Drop-a-Coin, Ball in the Bucket and more. There will be bran tubs where children can pick out a wrapped prize for a small fee. We will be holding the usual excellent quality raffle with proceeds going to our charity of choice, the Wenvoe Wildlife Group. These funds will help them to continue their wonderful work. There will also be refreshments, with cakes by Glen and hot and cold beverages.

And last, but not least, there will be a visitation by Madame Gorgonzola whose name is as cheesy as her fortune telling – and as doubtful!

This promises to be a good fun day out so don’t miss out.
