Last Formal Meeting.

Wenvoe WI met again this month for what was their last formal meeting before the summer break.

On this occasion Mrs Viv Turan was our speaker. Viv is very much a ‘friend’ of Wenvoe WI and has a regular ‘spot’ each year in our July meetings. This time she regaled us with ‘Growing Up’ – a veritable ‘trip’ down memory lane as we all relived our respective delights, escapades and pastimes of hopscotch, skipping, marbles, first attempts at make-up, the hula hoop, cherished ambitions and the reality of a job. Viv’s talk was thoroughly entertaining and was enjoyed wholeheartedly by everyone. This was followed by the usual tea and on this occasion – cakes of different varieties.

During August, we intend to hold two informal ‘get-togethers’ in the Wenvoe Arms outside Barn or garden (depending on the weather). These will occur on the 8th and 22nd August at 2.00pm.

The next full meeting of Wenvoe WI is on 1st Sept. in the Church Hall at 7.00pm. This will be a ‘Fish and Chip and Quiz night. New members are always very welcome.

Annual General Meeting

Annual General Meeting.

Wenvoe WI met this month as usual, and our meeting on this occasion was our Annual General meeting, held with a Glamorgan Federation advisor – Ms Viv Hayes – present.

Both our Secretary and Treasurer gave their annual reports which were accepted by the members present. This was followed by the President’s address, during which thanks were expressed to the following for their kindness and services rendered: Jennie and Digby at The Wenvoe Arms for their support and allowing us to use their outdoor premise during the Covid restrictions; to the Church of Wales and Mrs Carol Wyllie for the use of the Church Hall.

A new Committee for 2022-2023 was adopted:

President – Mrs Janet Young.

Deputy President – Mrs Madeleine Rees.

Treasurer – Mrs Debbie David

Secretaries – Mrs Pam Ewington and Mrs Diane Pate

Other Committee members – Mrs Pat Weavers, Mrs Jean Woodman, Mrs Alex Griffiths and Mrs Paula Johnston.

Our next meeting on June 2nd will be our Jubilee Party when members will wear their ‘Jubilee hats’. This will take place at the earlier time of 6.00pm in order to facilitate members who wish to join in with the village walk to the Lighting of the Beacon.

New members are always most welcome.

The Enigma Of The Eleventh Child

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Wenvoe WI met as usual on 5th April at 7pm in the Church Hall.

Once again, the Wenvoe WI gathered in the Church Hall for their monthly meeting on 5th April at 7pm. The Speaker for that occasion was their president who spoke about the enigma of the eleventh child born to Richard Duke of York and was destined to become King Richard III of England in 1483. Portrayed as a Machiavellian tyrant by William Shakespeare in his play ‘Richard III’, and having ruled for just two years, Richard was defeated at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 by Henry Tudor, heralding the commencement of the Tudor era. As Lord Protector of the Realm, Richard did much good for the poor of the land, upholding their rights against the greedy and wealthy Barons, by establishing a Court of Requests. Also, Richard founded the Kings and Queens colleges at Cambridge.

We were pleased to welcome several new potential members to our gathering, and the next WI meeting is scheduled for Thursday 5th May in the Church Hall at 7pm, which will be an Annual General Meeting, to be presided over by Caroline Davies, from the Glamorgan Federation Board of the WI.

Life As An Edwardian Maid

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Wenvoe WI met as usual on 3rd March at 7pm in the Church Hall.

On that occasion we were entertained by Debra John from Swansea who, having donned the apron and cap, regaled us with an amusing account of ‘life as an Edwardian Maid’. Her talk spanned from her duties throughout a normal day which began at five in the morning, to her evident disgust at the indolence of Footmen and the disruption caused by having the new-fangled ‘electricity’ installed in the Manor House.

Next month the WI will meet on 7th April, when the subject for the evening is King Richard III.

A warm welcome is ensured to all visitors.

We’re back!

At last, Wenvoe WI members were able to meet as normal in the Church Hall on Thursday Feb 3rd. Many thanks to Carol Wylie for her prompt action and advice.
It was a well-attended occasion, and we held our ‘rummage’ / unwanted Christmas presents sale. One member even brought a ‘simulated’ fur coat along and it was duly auctioned!
On Valentine,s Day afternoon, an informal meeting was held for members in the Wenvoe Arms, and we would like to express our thanks to Jenny and the staff for their welcome and willingness to provide us with a venue during the pandemic.
Our next meeting is on March 3rd, at 7pm in the Church hall, when Debra John from Swansea will address us as ‘an Edwardian maid’, describing the duties and difficulties of such a task.
All new members are ensured of a warm welcome.

December Update

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Our members met on November 4th for a Fish and Chip Evening, courtesy of the Fish Shop at the Murch, Dinas Powys. There were 24 members present and we all enjoyed our meal, as well as a Word Quiz. Our President entertained us with the customs and foibles of eating in the 1950s.

We have a busy December ahead with a Christmas Party on the 3rd, followed by our annual Christmas Lunch at the Wenvoe Arms on the 8th and finally a Christmas Coffee Morning on the 15th.

We intend to commence the New Year on January 6th with a sale/auction of unwanted Christmas presents and other items.

Our WI meets on the first Thursday of the month in the Wenvoe Church Hall at 7.00pm and new members are very welcome.

7th October Meeting

7th October Meeting

Our meeting on 7th Oct was in the Church Hall, our usual venue. This was a ‘Poetry Please’ evening. Two further meetings are planned for this year :

4th November – Fish and Chips evening

2nd December – Christmas Party and a Christmas Lunch on 8th Dec in the Wenvoe Arms.

There is a full programme of year’s activities planned, to include a variety of speakers, a quiz night, and a ‘Bring and Buy’ night in January.

We will be delighted to welcome any new members as our meetings are relaxed and quite informal. As discernible from snippets of the proposed programme, we meet on the first Thursday of each month in the Church Hall.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Our meeting on 2nd September was a “Welcome Back” occasion after 18 months with no monthly meetings. Retiring President Madeleine welcomed everyone. A special welcome was given to our Advisor, Barbara Bowring (who is also the President of Barry Highlight WI), our new member Alexandra Griffiths and our visitor, Debbie Tanner.

Our member, Paula Johnson, recently received 2 highly commended certificates for her photos of Summer Holidays. Well done Paula!!

The meeting commenced with a minute’s silence during which our thoughts turned to Margaret and Gloria who sadly passed away in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Margaret was our Vice President, a former President, a former Treasurer and our only founder member. Although Gloria was unable to rejoin us this year we shall remember them both with great fondness.

Members were delighted to see Avril present and now well on the road to recovery. We were pleased to learn that Pam Cockerill has now had her second cataract operation and we are looking forward to welcoming her back soon.

The Officers for 2021-2022 were elected and are:-

President – Mrs Janet Young, Vice-President – Mrs Madeleine Rees, Secretary – Mrs Pam Ewington , Treasurer – Mrs Debbie David. Committee Members are Mrs June Davis and Mrs Jean Woodman and also Mrs Pam Weavers who was welcomed “aboard” as a new committee member.

At this meeting Madeleine was stepping down after being our President for many years. On behalf of all members our Secretary, Pam, presented Madeleine with a lovely shoulder bag, a generous Marks and Spencer voucher and a poem, created by Pam herself, along with a Thank You card. She was delighted but totally shocked and overwhelmed by the kindness shown to her. Members were thanked for all the support they had given Madeleine over the years and for their continuous hard work, which was all greatly appreciated.

It was time to hand over to our new President, Janet Young. Janet was thanked for kindly agreeing to be our President and was welcomed into her new role.

The programme for 2021-2022 was discussed and members welcomed the opportunity to add their names to the “Poetry Please” list for the next meeting on Thursday, 7th October at 7pm. Members will be informed of the location of our next meeting but hopefully we will be back in the Church Hall. We are looking forward to hearing members favourite poems and we will also be taking orders for our Fish and Chip Supper in November.

We are extremely grateful to Jenny and Digby, of the Wenvoe Arms, for allowing us to use “The Barn” for our September meeting and would like to express our thanks for their kindness.

Hopefully all members are staying safe and well, whilst enjoying the summer weather.

We are still hoping it won’t be too long before we can resume our monthly meetings, but until then members have been enjoying several social gatherings in the Wenvoe Arms garden. Another date is planned for some time in August so we hope the weather will continue to be kind on our chosen date.

In the July/August edition of WI Life we were introduced to our new National Federation Chair Anne Jones. Retiring Chair Lynne Stubbings delivered a landmark speech at the historic Annual Meeting on 8th June, with guest speakers HRH the Countess of Wessex, Dame Cressida Dick and Baroness Hale. They all gave uplifting talks which contributed towards the overwhelming success of the meeting.

The magazine also included various interesting articles such as the Federation of Wales Conference, All Hands On Deck, Meet the Toad Patrol and the story of a former ballerina who has now turned to sewing.

Recently our thoughts and prayers have been with our Secretary, Pam and her family, as Pam sadly lost her brother at the end of June.

We are still looking forward to seeing any photographs members have of “Sunflowers in Bloom”. They will be most welcome for our ongoing scrapbook and for our contribution towards the WI archives.

If you are celebrating a birthday in August please accept our warmest wishes for that special day.

We would like to extend many congratulations to our member Avril and her husband Jeff on the occasion of their Golden Wedding Anniversary at the end of August.
