Dear Friends,

As you will all be aware we are entering an unprecedented time in the village and also across the country and the world as the full effect of Coronavirus begins to take hold in our communities. As we have seen from the experiences of other countries, such as China and Italy, one of the ways of dealing with the spread of the virus is to close down places where the public gather. The decision was taken this week that the Church in Wales – along with other Christian and different faith organisations – has stopped doing formal services, so all our church services and meetings are cancelled with immediate effect. It had been my intention to keep St Mary’s open at certain times for private prayer and reflection. However, since the Prime Minister’s briefing on Monday 23 March, that is not possible either.

This Easter may well be the first time that the Eucharist has not been celebrated in St Mary’s for 800 years, although it is conceivable that there were other occasions of great national crisis, when this occurred.

In the meantime, we obviously have a responsibility to ourselves, family, friends and neighbours so do look after one another by looking after yourselves too.

Coronavirus – Emergency Meeting

Coronavirus – Emergency Meeting

An emergency meeting of the Community Council was held on Tuesday 17th March, with the sole purpose of discussing actions to be taken to address consequences of the Coronavirus. The Council did not meet again for the March meeting.

The Community Centre will be closed, although available by request. The Council Clerk, Claire Harlow, will not be available for face-to-face contact with the public, but can be contacted at the usual times by phone or by email.

It was agreed that help should be offered to the Wenvoe community, particularly to anyone who is unable to leave the house. The Neighbourhood Watch organisation has been asked to provide contacts to make it easy for anyone to ask for help. (see Front Cover). Some schemes have already started via social media, but it is important to remember that not everyone is online. It is so important that we look after each other in these difficult times.

There are a number of other schemes which have started as well, particularly on social media. However, not everyone is online, and it is important that no-one is forgotten.

If anyone cannot get hold of a volunteer, ring the Community Centre (02920 591139) and leave a message on the answering machine, which will be checked as often as possible.

 

 

Neighbourhood Watch Team Proposals

The Neighbourhood Watch Team

The team are putting together a scheme where any Wenvoe resident can call for help with things like picking up shopping, collecting medicines, posting letters, or just a friendly phone chat. They will try to make a volunteer available anywhere in the village, who can be contacted easily. You should see a small form come through the door in the coming days with the name of a contact. Note that volunteers will not have medical skills, so in the event of sickness, please follow Government and NHS advice from the news.

The integrity of the Neighbourhood Watch cannot be underestimated and you are directed also to the message from Alan French on page 5.

WENVOE’S COMMITMENT TO THE HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF EVERYONE IN OUR COMMUNITY

By the time we are reading this edition of ‘What’s On’, we will all be aware of the speed with which our trustworthy community organisations are responding to the challenging times we face, so that everyone in the village remains connected and supported during the period of social distancing and self-isolation. This, together with social media schemes and the support which we will continue to share as individuals with our neighbours and friends, will ensure no-one is forgotten.

Key support will come from Wenvoe Neighbourhood Watch, the Community Council, Vicar Jon, Priest in Charge of Wenvoe with St Lythans, and local suppliers and there is useful information below and on pages 4-5.

Together we will be able to practise the individual and collective responsibility as outlined by the Government and by looking after each other, we can make a significant contribution to the health and wellbeing of everyone in our community.
