The London Marathon For Marie Curie

RUNNING THE LONDON MARATHON FOR MARIE CURIE

Hello everyone!

I am incredibly lucky to be running the 2021 London Marathon for Marie Curie, a charity extremely close to my family’s heart. We lost my dad, Alun, to bowel cancer in 2008. At the time, I was only eight years old. Dad spent his final days at Marie Curie Holme Tower Hospice, Penarth, and Marie Curie were unbelievably supportive to dad and us during his illness. This support has remained ever-present in our family’s life in the twelve years since he passed.

Dad completed the 1985 London Marathon in an impressive 3 hours and 20 minutes, undoubtedly one of the best moments of his life. I feel so proud to be able to follow in his footsteps this year (although nowhere near as quickly), and to do it for Marie Curie.

The community of Wenvoe has been vital to our family. From Saturday morning football matches, meals at the Wenvoe Arms with Dad, the village shop giving me my first ever job, the school, the park, the community centre…. The past year has been very difficult for all charities, with normal fundraising efforts being halted due to the pandemic. Any donations to the fundraising page from the people of Wenvoe would be hugely, hugely appreciated, and will help frontline nurses provide care to cancer patients and their loved ones.

Donations can be made at the following website:- https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-display/showROFundraiserPage? userUrl=HenryWaddon1&pageUrl=1

Alternatively, if donating to this website is difficult, you can contact me directly via the following contacts, and we can arrange to donate on your behalf:

Thank you so much for your support.

Henry Waddon

Stress Buster Strollers

STRESS BUSTER STROLLERS

From July Valeways will offer a new walk: the Stress Buster Strollers. Everyone can experience stress, resulting from an array of anxieties, for ex-ample, about family, work, money, health, retire-ment, lack of sleep, bereavement. Stress can make people feel frustrated, upset, angry or nervous and can lead to people feeling lonely, cut off and isolat-ed. In order to try to ease some of these feelings, Valeways will offer a Stress Buster stroll: a safe, guided walk by the sea and through woodlands, with a friendly, sociable group where people can chat freely. It is not a professional counselling service, just the offer of some time and space in the fresh air to hopefully provide a boost in mood and energy. The NHS encourages people with its Every Mind Matters initiative to live a healthy, active life. One of their tips is to go walking, as this activity is one proven way to relieve stress and have a positive im-pact on the way an individual can feel. If you would like to enjoy a short stroll in beautiful surroundings and hopefully enrich your mood and outlook, please come and join the Stress Buster strollers on the last Tuesday of every month, meeting at 10 30, next to the Romilly Park tennis courts.

Please Help Me Raise Funds

PLEASE HELP ME RAISE FUNDS FOR A HOMELESS CHARITY

I am taking on this challenge to raise £1000 for a homeless charity in Wales which is run by my daughter Bonnie.

Housing Justice Cymru mobilises Christian action on homelessness and housing need through love, justice, advocacy and nurture. They really do excellent work. I will make four pilgrimages to holy places this year starting with a mini pilgrimage from Llandaff Cathedral to the holy shrine and statue of Mary at Penrhys in the Rhondda. My final pilgrimage will be to some Orthodox monasteries in Greece. I aim to complete all four between June and December this year.

Please donate to this good cause. The link to my JustGiving page is

https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Alun-Davies-walks-Wales

I have pledged to raise £1000 for homelessness in Wales this year and any more will be very welcome by this charity.

My four pilgrimages will be as follows:

  • Llandaff to Penrhys – a 21 mile walk from the door of Llandaff Cathedral to the medieval shrine at Penrhys in the Rhondda valley where there is a fine statue of Mary, known as Our Lady of Penrhys.
  • The Monk’s Trod from Strata Florida to Abbey Cwm Hir – across bleak mid Wales! This is a 25-mile route linking two former Cistercian monasteries and follows the historic track used by monks, workers, merchants and officials of the Cistercian order who would walk, ride on donkeys or mules, or even travel on slow moving ox carts in dry weather.
  • St Cuthbert’s Way from Melrose to the Holy Island. This is 62 miles of varied cross-country walking from Melrose where St Cuthbert began his religious life to Lindisfarne his final resting place.
  • A week on the Holy Mount Athos in Greece clearing the pilgrim footpaths. Members of the Friends of Mount Athos meet up to clear the historic paved paths linking the 22 monasteries there.

I will be most grateful for a donation however large or small.

Best wishes

Alun Davies DL, Honorary Consul of Hungary.
