5th Wenvoe Scarecrow Festival

This year the 5th Wenvoe Scarecrow festival will take place on Saturday 21st.September from 2.00 to 5.00pm and Sunday 22nd September from 10.30 to 11.00am when the winners will be announced.

Please start to think about entering a scarecrow this year even if you have not entered before. Its free to enter and there is no theme. We would like to make this year’s festival the best year yet as after this year the festival will become biennial, so we want this year to live long in our memories – well two years at least! More details will follow in future issues of What’s On. However, if you are keen to start building your scarecrow now further information can be obtained by emailing wenvoescarecrows@ yahoo.com or ring Vicar Jon on 02920595347. Please put the date in your diary.

 

 

Dogs Trust, Bridgend Appeal

Dogs Trust, Bridgend are asking for donations of towels, blankets and quilts which are used as bedding for the many dogs in their care. Most of the bedding is washed and reused but much has to be disposed of due to hygiene issues and damage from the dogs so supplies are always in need of replenishing. Indeed, as the Dogs Trust is a charity totally reliant on donations, it would welcome support of any kind, including dog food, dog toys or charitable donations via its website.
If you have anything to donate please let me know and I will collect it and deliver it to the Dogs Trust.

Meet the Author

Meet the author – Wednesday February 13th at 7:30pm upstairs in The Wenvoe Arms. (Free entry; donations to the library) Ron Jones who lives is Risca is 101 years old and is the oldest Poppy seller in Wales. He was 23 years old when he became a POW in North Africa in 1942, and spent more than 2 years in the concentration camp in Auschwitz and survived the death march. Ron has written a book called the “The Auschwitz Goalkeeper”, where as a POW he played in goal for Wales in a football match at the Nazi death camp. Ron appeared on the One Show, when he returned to Auschwitz and relived some of his terrible memories.

Christmas Eve Service at St Mary’s Church Wenvoe

This will be my fifth Christmas as Priest in Charge at the Parish of Wenvoe. During this time we have always celebrated the First Communion of Christmas (commonly known as Midnight Mass) with a service starting at 11.30pm on Christmas Eve. This will definitely continue to be the case this year in 2018. However, several people have mentioned to me that this service is too late for them to attend. I thought it would be interesting therefore to conduct a Straw Poll to see if people would prefer this service to be at 9.30pm in future years. A copy of the voting form is shown. If you usually attend this service, or if you would like to attend this service in the future, then you may wish to pick up a voting paper from St Mary’s Church, Wenvoe during the services on 23rd, 24th and 25th December and to return them by 30th December to the boxes provided in Church. We will then look at the results to see what would be the best timing of this service in future years.

PROBUS (2) CLUB, BARRY

We have recently moved our venue to Wenvoe Golf Club for our fortnightly meetings. The Club is for former professionals and businessmen to associate in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Normally at our meetings, we have a speaker followed by lunch.

During the summer months we vary our social programme by including our partners and friends at a dinner and our lunches. We also arrange skittle matches and a coach trip.
