Christmas Craft Fair

 

The third annual Wenvoe Craft Workshop™️ Wenvoe Christmas Craft Fair is fast approaching. As usual entry is free and there will be a varied selection of beautiful hand crafted items on sale. With Christmas just around the corner, why would you want to miss out? We have some new faces and some familiar ones to tempt you with their crafts and there will, of course, be the usual raffle. This year the proceeds go, once again, to Rally for Romeo – the fundraiser for Romeo Hadley to assist with his ongoing needs. If anyone has a raffle prize they would like to donate please contact Glenys or Mike using the contact details below. The now-familiar tag team of Mike Tucker and Gwyndaf Breese will be manning tables at the entrance to the Community Centre and you can indulge with hot or cold drinks and home made cakes and savouries at the refreshment area. This is always a good community event with a lovely atmosphere and we very much hope you will join us. We would love to see you.

WELSH CLASS IN WENVOE

 

Do you speak some Welsh? Perhaps you learned years ago and need an update/refresher course?

We are a small friendly group just beginning the second year of our Foundation (Sylfaen) course in Welsh as a second language. Our course would suit anyone who has some of the basics, but is not too confident in using all of the tenses and sentence patterns. If you started to learn Welsh and completed Sylfaen 1, the classes would also be excellent for you.

The course is provided by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Learn Welsh department, and topics covered will include:

Future Tense; discussing plans; Giving advice; should/would; distance, size and weight; comparisons; dates and periods of time.

From Renoir’s Blue Lady to global surveillance and drone warfare: the National Museum has it all.

The National Museum in Cardiff is well known for housing one of Europe's finest art collections, covering a period of 500 years and including one of Europe's best collections of Impressionist art. When the Rolling Stones played the Millennium Stadium recently, Mick Jagger announced to the crowd that he and Keith Richard had hired bikes for a trip to the museum to see Renoir’s Blue Lady. The pair apparently followed this with a pint of Brains and a trip to Caroline Street for curry and chips.

The National Museum does not just deal in old masters. Later this month the National Museum hosts its 8th biennial contemporary international arts exhibition, Artes Mundi 8. Admission is free and runs from 27th October 2018 to February 24th, 2019.

Artes Mundi was founded in 2002 by Welsh artist William Wilkins. The winner of the Artes Mundi Prize will take home £40,000; the largest art prize in the UK and one of the most significant in the world. The Independent newspaper has called it the best art prize in Great Britain, ‘totally eclipsing and outclassing the Turner Prize.’ BBC news went even further calling it ‘One of the leading contemporary art prizes in the world.’

The event has become increasingly popular. Previous exhibitions, based mainly at the National Museum and occasionally using smaller venues such as Chapter Arts Centre, have attracted well over 100,000 visitors. In contrast to the Turner Prize, which requires its nominees to be either born or working in Britain, artists from anywhere in the world can be nominated.

Artes Mundi is Latin for ‘arts of the world’ and as such, selected artists are united by an interest in global issues. The work exhibited is often political and can be controversial.  

So what can we expect to see this year? A short-list of five internationally acclaimed artists, was selected from over 450 nominations spanning 86 countries.

Bouchra Khalili is Moroccan-French. Her video work, which focuses on political minorities, was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2016.

Anna Boghiguian is an Armenian. She is a nomadic artist, constantly moving between different cities across the globe. Her work, which has been described as both funny and frightening, investigates subjects such as war and revolution.

Otobong Nkanga is a Nigerian artist. Her work explores changes in the environment and is part of a permanent collection at the Tate Modern.

Trevor Paglen is an American who launched an artwork into orbit 2012. Paglan’s ongoing project investigates global state surveillance and the ethics of drone warfare.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul is a Thai artist whose video and feature films have won widespread recognition, including two prizes from the Cannes Film Festival. His films cover themes such as dreams, nature and Western perceptions of Asia.

The Annette Bracey School of Dancing

 

The Annette Bracey School of Dancing has had a busy year, so we thought it would be nice for you all to know what's been going on.

We are very proud to announce that you can now see our school professionally on Mr Tumble's DVD, from the TV Programme 'Something Special' on the episode 'Loud and Quiet'. It was filmed a little while ago now at our own Village Hall but still a joy to watch!

From the young, to the more mature student, whether it be Freestyle, Ballet, Street or Exercise, we try to cover it all. Our classes are run throughout the year at the Wenvoe Village Hall on a Saturday from 11:30am to 3:00pm (starting term on the 8th of September 2018) encouraging the younger through to all age groups. We are NATD qualified teachers teaching for enjoyment and through to qualifications in which we pride ourselves. We thrive on keeping up-to date with music trends and the challenge that provides.

It was so nice to see how well all the girls did in their exam session this year with distinctions in Ballet, Freestyle and Street. We concluded our term with a lovely Summer Concert, and it was so wonderful to see our ex-students at the concert well on their way to their careers in Performing Arts.

We have two school shows a year and also perform periodically in the West End of London.

If anyone would like to start, either from scratch or take up dance again, don't be shy! Give us a call and we would love to kick-start that experience and hear from you! Your initial trial class will be free as a taster session!

If you feel that age has pipped you at the post, why not try something else?

Annette is a qualified Zumba Instructor part of the ZIN network and has a Monday evening class starting in our Church Hall on the 10th September from 6:15-7:00pm which is a new Zumba Cardio class combining Freestyle, Toning and Sentão (incorporating chair-work). The music is fab and great for shifting those unwanted calories (consumed in the summer via those cheeky ice-creams!) helping you get ready for a little black

number over Christmas!

If you feel like something completely different again, why not try Annette's Balletcanetics class? This is very popular in numerous Cardiff Health Clubs and popularity is spreading! So, why not be part of the buzz and give it a go?!

We have two classes a week in the village, one on Monday evenings from the 10th September in the Church Hall from 7:00-7:45pm and one on a Wednesday evening in the Village Hall starting on the 12th September from 6:15pm-7:00pm.

Balletcanetics is really different from anything else, as it is done from a standing position, or a chair if required, to ensure you get the best out of your bodies without getting down onto the floor. It really does strengthen your core and give you a sense of wellbeing. Using the breathing essences of Yoga and Pilates and slow, controlled movements incorporating strengthening exercises from Ballet, it is a beautiful combination. Although it is slow and controlled, you do work, believe me! The ambience of the class is truly amazing; people find it invigorating and empowering where no one is too old to try.

Wenvoe Christmas Craft Fair

 

Wenvoe Craft Workshop™️ proudly presents the 3rd Annual Wenvoe Christmas Craft Fair on 18 November 2018.

I know you’re probably thinking ‘Christmas! Already!’ but it’s not as far away as you may think. To ease you into the buying frenzy gently there can be no better event than the Wenvoe Christmas Craft Fair. As usual you will find a varied selection of unique hand crafted items that will serve as perfect Christmas gifts for loved ones, not-so-loved ones, downright awkward ones or simply a treat for yourself. We have a mix of familiar favourites and new faces among the crafters, offering something for everyone and I will give more details about the crafts that will be in attendance in next month’s What’s On. Mike (aka The Village Gardener – amongst other things) would like to make it known that he will be manning a stall again – more details to follow.

There will be some fabulous prizes, including delicious hampers, in the Charity raffle with proceeds going to the charitable fund for Romeo Hadley’s ongoing needs. When you fancy a refueling break you can visit the refreshment area where you can indulge in a hot or cold drink and a slice of delicious homemade cake (or two) from a varied selection and there will also be some homemade savouries to tempt you.

This is always a good, community day and you can catch up with old friends and make some new ones whilst ticking things off your Christmas list. Whether you’ve been naughty or nice we will be delighted to see you so come and join us.

WILDLIFE GROUP COMPETITIONS

WILDLIFE GROUP COMPETITIONS

Are you a photographer, artist or craftsperson? If so, here is a competition that might be of interest. To celebrate our fungi, mushrooms and toadstools the Wildlife Group have organised some competitions with funding and support from Grow Wild. These are the categories:

Category 1. Take a photograph of any fungi you come across

Category 2. Do a drawing or painting of any fungi

Category 3. Use craft skills to make a model of fungi. This could be stitched (see photo), carved or constructed.

You can either attach the photo or a scanned painting and email your entry to bruce7@ btinternet.com or you can leave your original piece of artwork (no bigger than A3) or model with a member of staff at the Wenvoe Village Library on opening days. Please ensure your name, age and contact details are associated with your entry. Images of your entries may be used by the Wildlife Group for publicity purposes.

You can submit entries anytime between 1st September and the end of October. We then hope to create a display at the Village Library. Entries are open to everyone and there are no age restrictions. First prize in each category will receive tokens to the value of £30 but there will also be some £10 prizes for runners up.
