Celebrating Saint David’s Day Etc

Celebrating Saint David’s Day

We celebrated Saint David’s Day with a wonderful Eisteddfod. It was a day of celebrating super competi-tion entries, including home projects – thank you to all for your wonderful efforts. Greaves were the overall winners and Maddie Coles in Year 6 was crowned as The Bard.

Our choir excelled when they sang at a Barnardo’s Concert in Saint David’s Hall in Cardiff. We really were incredibly proud of them all. A massive well done and thank you also to Mrs Jones, who provides so much musical talent and inspiration.

We were extremely fortunate to have had a visit from the Welsh rugby player, Justin Tipuric. Pupils in Years 5 and 6 enjoyed the opportunity to ask him lots of questions.

Netball Success

Well done to our netballers who played in a tournament at Cadoxton and won all 5 of their matches! Well done to Amelia and Maliah who were awarded Players of the Match. Thanks really must go to Mrs Plevey for her time commitment to our netballers – it is hugely appreciated!

Cardiff Museum Visit

Years 5 and 6 visited Cardiff Museum where they en-joyed viewing the art exhibits and also taking part in a sculpture workshop. They were a real credit to school.

Barry and District News visited school last week; keep an eye out in the local news for photographs of our children happily engaging in a variety of activities.

Thanks ‘The Works’ Of Wenvoe

We would like to thank ‘The Works’ of Wenvoe for their kind donation to our Christmas Raffle. The Works have supported many raffles at the Play-group and we would like to show our appreciation for their continued support by sharing our thanks in the What’s On.

Many local businesses support Wenvoe Playgroup CIO and we would like to thank everyone for their donations and support. It is thanks to local business-es, the Community and our Families, that Wenvoe Playgroup CIO remains today. We would like to thank everyone who has believed in us and we are now operating stronger than ever with the support of our community, so thank you.

The 30 Hour Free Childcare has also made a differ-ence to the operation of Playgroup. We now have over forty families enrolled with us and many on our waiting lists for September 2020.

To find out more about the 30 Hour Free Childcare Offer for September, please contact your local Family Information Centre to see if you are eligible for the offer. Both parents or single parent family must be working A MINIMUM of 16 hours per week on minimum wage. The offer is for families with Children, the term after their 3rd Birthday until they attend reception class. 12.5 hours of the 30 hours are used in LEA Nurseries. Here at Playgroup we run term time only alongside Gwenfo Nursery.

Here at Wenvoe Playgroup we support 17.5 hours of Free Care, which we can be flexible in our ar-rangements. Most children with us at this time at-tend 5 mornings per week 9 – 1pm and transit across to Gwenfo Nursery for 1pm until 3:30pm. A packed lunch is provided from home and parents pay a top up fee per week of £11.25 as they attend 20 hours per week.

Of course, you may attend a four day week from 9am until 1pm for FREE using 16 hours. Some pre-fer to use 15 hours , 8am UNTIL 1pm and pay a top up fee for breakfast club of 50p per day (£1.50 per week).

We also have children using 17.5 hours with us, as their local school does not have an LEA Nursery provision and they are just outside the Gwenfo Catchment Area. Some also choose not to move onto their catchment nursery as they have settled with us, hence limited spaces during the Spring and Summer months. Our advice to you is; if you are thinking of joining us in the academic year 2020 to 2021 for wrap around care, then contact us and share your wishes. Although Nursery admissions for September 2020 will not be notified until the end of May, we can keep you in mind for a place from September should you be successful.

We also provide a Breakfast Club for children who attend Gwenfo Reception for £5 per day. Breakfast club opens at 8am here at the Village Hall and chil-dren are taken safely to reception at Gwenfo for 8:50am start.

Nursery Children who attend morning Nursery at Gwenfo, also attend breakfast and we take them across at 8:50am or they stay until 1pm and are tak-en across for the afternoon session. The latter is the most popular. You can see from the above how flex-ible we are to meet your needs. Just please don’t ask us to do overnight or weekends ha ha.

If you are interested in how we can help you, then please contact us either by email-ing wenvoeplaygroup@btinternet.com or phone 02920507494.

Gwenfo School Choir Event

In Gwenfo school their choir will be going to sing at saint Barnardos church on Monday 2nd of march. Go see Gwenfo school sing it’s worth it and Gwenfo choir has improved massively this month.

On March the 4th Gwenfo will celebrate saint David’s Day by wearing traditional Welsh clothes or red tops for the red dragon. Gwenfo school does competitions for best handwriting, best story, best art, best poetry and best drawing on a flag. Children are divided into houses Greaves, Whitehall, Ballas and Wrinstone. To see who can get the most house points. These houses are so competitive that the hall is like a rugby stadium it’s so loud in a competitive way. When a house wins, they go crazy and they feel happy for their team and their self.

We hope you all have a great half term from Gwenfo School.

Start of the Spring Term

Start of the Spring Term

Well it’s hard to believe that we are back in school! The Christmas holidays flashed by in a whizz! It was lovely to welcome our pupils back to school for the start of the Spring term. We would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year!

The Spring term is always such a lovely and busy time in school.

In the next couple of weeks, we will be saying goodbye to our students, including six Canadians, who have been with us since the end of September. We wish them every success as they continue their training in different schools and also in their future careers.

Our school chickens have now officially retired! They have gone to join Sam Miller and his family to enjoy their retirement in peace and tranquillity! Thank you very much to Mr and Mrs Miller, Maisie and Sam.

Our value this half term is Perseverance. Vicar Jon led a super assembly last week, showed us his beautiful new stole (which he had for Christmas) and told an engaging action story, which the children loved.

Mrs Ford will be taking a group of children to a Modern Foreign languages conference in which they will be having taster sessions in French, Spanish, German and Mandarin! Tres bien Mrs Ford! Danke schoen!

2019 Round Up

Happy New Year to all.

Sorry we haven’t had time to write recently, we have been very busy with the change over of our company to Wenvoe Playgroup CIO. (We will still be known as Wenvoe Playgroup though.)

During the Autumn Term we have been very busy raising funds for others. The Children, their families and staff raised £70 for Breast Cancer during the month of October, by wearing something pink to Playgroup. This also supported the Children’s learning; by beginning to understand that everyone can wear pink.

In November we held a sponsored fancy dress, in which we raised a staggering £322 for CRACKERJACKS Childrens trust, who help support Children with disabilities. Being a Charity ourselves, we know just how important it is to raise funds and support goals.

We had a very successful start to our new term in September. Our Breakfast Club has not only supported Playgroup Children from 8am each day, it has provided support to families; offering their Children breakfast, then onto Morning Nursery and Reception at Gwenfo School. We offer support to take the Children across to School for their busy days at 08:50am. Should you require further information on ‘Breakfast Club’, then please email us.

Our morning sessions are now fully booked until September 2020 with waiting lists for any spaces that may become available for Children currently enrolled.

We have approximately 15 families on our waiting list for September 2020 and we would suggest that should you be thinking of joining Wenvoe Playgroup from September then get in touch via the email as soon as possible. We will hold an open afternoon in May. Your email will be placed on a waiting list (once replied to of course) to receive an invite to attend in May with a view to secure sessions from September 2020.

Nursery admissions for September 2020 are open this month and are usually notified around the end of May for September intake. Keep a watchful eye on the Vale of Glamorgan website.

We can make a note for your preferred sessions at Playgroup (if requiring support) with Gwenfo Nursery whilst you are awaiting notification from the Vale of Glamorgan.

Don’t forget we are enrolled to support the 30 Hour Free Childcare Offer with The Vale and Cardiff Councils, so Children from all areas are able to sign up to the Playgroup for 17.5 hours FREE per week, should families fit the criteria. More about the 30 hour care will be sent to What’s On soon, or if you want to know more now, then email us and we can send you some documentation for information.

We expect a very busy year.

The Boy Who Laughed At Santa Claus

The Boy Who Laughed At Santa Claus

In Baltimore there lived a boy
He wasn’t anybody’s joy.
Although his name was Jabez Dawes
His character was full of flaws.
In school he never led his classes
He hid old ladies’ reading glasses
His mouth was open when he chewed
And elbows to the table glued.
He stole the milk of hungry kittens
And walked through doors marked No Admittance.
He said he acted thus because
There wasn’t any Santa Claus.

Another trick that tickled Jabez
Was crying “Boo!” at little babies.
He brushed his teeth  they said in town
Sideways instead of up and down.
Yet people pardoned every sin
And viewed his antics with a grin
Till they were told by Jabez Dawes
“There isn’t any Santa Claus!”

Deploring how he did behave
His parents swiftly sought their grave.
They hurried through the portals pearly
And Jabez left the funeral early.
Like whooping cough
from child to child
He sped to spread the rumor wild:
“Sure as my name is Jabez Dawes
There isn’t any Santa Claus!”

Slunk like a weasel or a marten
Through nursery and kindergarten
Whispering low to every tot
“There isn’t any no there’s not!”
The children wept all Christmas Eve
And Jabez chortled up his sleeve.
No infant dared to hang up his stocking
For fear of Jabez’ ribald mocking.
He sprawled on his untidy bed
Fresh malice dancing in his head
When presently with scalp a-tingling
Jabez heard a distant jingling;
He heard the crunch of sleigh and hoof
Crisply alighting on the roof.
What good to rise and bar the door?
A shower of soot was on the floor.
What was beheld by Jabez Dawes?
The fireplace full of Santa Claus!
Then Jabez fell upon his knees
With cries of “Don’t ” and “Pretty please.
” He howled “I don’t know where you read it
But anyhow I never said it!”

“Jabez ” replied the angry saint
“It isn’t I it’s you that ain’t.
Although there is a Santa Claus
There isn’t any Jabez Dawes!”
Said Jabez with impudent vim
“Oh yes there is; and I am him!
Your magic don’t scare me it doesn’t”—
And suddenly he found he wasn’t!
From grimy feet to grimy locks
Jabez became a Jack-in-the-box
An ugly toy with springs unsprung
Forever sticking out his tongue.

The neighbors heard his mournful squeal;
They searched for him but not with zeal.
No trace was found of Jabez Dawes
Which led to thunderous applause
And people drank a loving cup
And went and hung their stockings up.
All you who sneer at Santa Claus
Beware the fate of Jabez Dawes
The saucy boy who mocked the saint.
Donder and Blitzen licked off his paint.

Scouts Cymru Adult Volunteer Of The Year

SCOUTS CYMRU ADULT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Heulwen Jenkins, 1st Wenvoe Scout Group’s Cub Leader and Assistant Beaver Leader, who was awarded Scouts Cymru’s Adult Volunteer Award for 2019!

At the October Celebration of Scouting annual event at the Metropole Hotel in mid-Wales, Heulwen was presented with her award by Rhian Moore, Chief Commissioner for Wales, and Joe Doherty, Scout Adventurer (Antarctica). They are pictured below along with Glenys Shelley, Cardiff and Vale Scouts, who was also awarded a lifetime achievement award at the ceremony. Many congratulations to both.

“Out of more than 3,100 adult Scout Leaders and assistants across Wales, Heulwen definitely deserves this award for the energy and enthusiasm she brings to delivering our programme and growing our Group. This award recognises her engagement with the Wenvoe community, including inviting other adults in the village to share their skills and experiences with our Young People, and celebrating the badges they are awarded. It is a privilege to have Heulwen as one of our leaders and this award celebrates how she lives the Scout values, champions diversity and inclusion in Scouting and helps Young People and adult volunteers develop #SkillsForLife. Bake Off Competition

On Friday, Staff took part in a Bake Off competition for Children In Need. Congratulations to Mr Bean, who came first and to the runner up, Mrs Ure. The children were able to buy the cakes to raise money for this excellent cause. Many thanks to our judges, Mr Sonny, Mrs Flynn, Mrs Hazelton and Nicola, our cook, who had the hard job of tasting all the cakes!!! Pupils also enjoyed wearing their own clothes for the day.

As part of anti-bullying week, last Tuesday, was ‘wear odd socks to school day’! Pupils in Years 5 and 6 also engaged in workshops run by Kidscape.

Parents and carers of prospective Nursery and Reception pupils were invited to an open morning or afternoon last week; they enjoyed a tour of the school with Miss Starke.

It’s this time of year again – the children and staff are busy rehearsing for their Christmas concerts! It is always a very busy and wonderful time of the year! If you pass school, you may well hear some lovely singing as the children practice for their performances.

We are very much looking forward to the run up to Christmas, with theatre trips and festive activities planned.

A Happy Christmas from all the staff and pupils.

First Half Term Completed!

First Half Term Completed!

We are finding it hard to believe that we have nearly completed our first half term! They say time flies when you are having fun and that is certainly true for us in school!

Our Reception class have settled beautifully into school life. They are busy learning to read key words and recognise sounds and numbers and we are so proud of them.

Year 1 are enjoying learning in their new classroom: their outdoor space is also completed, with a canopy for shade and shelter.

Year 5 led Worship; family and friends were invited and they enjoyed a super Harvest celebration.

To celebrate Harvest, all the children enjoyed sharing and eating delicious bread.

Year 6 led an information session on staying steady and avoiding falls – this was for the over 55 age bracket. Thank you Year 6.

As we approach half term, we will reflect on the past 8 weeks as a time of new beginnings, filled with exciting new challenges and fun times.

See the advert below for local stamp availability, post box locations and the areas covered by the Scout Christmas mail service.

WHY NOT LEND A HAND

The Scout Post requires adult support to carry out the majority of work involved. Each evening of the sorting week we need people to help sort cards into the different local areas. Our sorting office is set up in the Community Centre leisure room. We also require somebody to go to Llandaff each evening to exchange the sorted mail with the other participating scout groups and collect the mail for the Wenvoe area. By the end of the week with all our local mail sorted into roads we require deliverers. We are responsible for mail in Wenvoe, Brooklands area, Twyn-yr-Odyn, St Lythans, Dyffryn and The Downs. It is at this stage the whole family can lend a hand with a short walk in the area. Maps are available.

We will be sorting at the Community Centre at the following dates and times

Saturday 30th Nov. @ 7.00pm

Sunday 1st Dec @ 7.00pm

Monday 2nd Dec @ 7.00pm

Tuesday 3rd Dec @ 7.00pm

Wednesday 4th Dec. @ 7.45pm

Mail exchange starts on Saturday 30th November and continues until Wednesday 4th December. Delivery of the mail starts on Saturday 7th December.

If you would like to lend a hand with any of the activities involved please contact Martin Williams 20593345 or e-mail wenvoescoutgroup@gmail.com, Ian Moody 20594573 or Jane Fenton-May 20593221 or any leader connected with the scout group. Those who have assisted in the past have found it an enjoyable experience.

NOTE – The Scout post covers Cardiff and most of the Vale but does NOT extend to Beddau, Bridgend, Castleton, Church Village, Coychurch, Efail Isaf, Kenfig, Llantrisant, Llantwit Fadre, Marshfield, Miskin, North Cornelly, Ogmore & Garw Valley, Pencoed, Pontyclun, Porthcawl, Talbot Green, Tonteg which are all outside our area and hence we are sorry but we cannot deliver them.
