A Beautiful Summer’s Morning

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

A BEAUTIFUL SUMMER’S MORNING

On a beautiful summer’s morning the team tackled the border at the front of the Community Centre. After a job well done, Brian produced a bottle of Champagne to celebrate his birthday, while Glenys made a cake to wish Brian and Sandra every happiness in their new home and thank him for his service to the group. To be honest you would need to travel far to meet a nicer man.

Two new members joined the team this month, which will help us in keeping the village tidy.

If you are interested in the headgear worn by the team in the photograph, it will be on show at the scarecrow festival.

The next outing will be on the village green at 9.30am on Monday the 12th September

The Environment Team have put the anvil and vice from the old Wenvoe blacksmith’s shop on display adjacent to the Church Hall. The blacksmiths was located on the corner of Walston Road and Old Port Road opposite the church. The bungalow on the site is called The Forge and there is a well still in the garden. The team was given consent for this by the Community Council

The Depleted Team

On a blistering hot morning the depleted team tackled an overgrown hedge on Tarrws Lane. While doing so we cleared the rubbish that was obstructing the old well (pictured).

Some of the elders made up an interview panel to vet a new member. Big John sorted out his details and signed him up for life membership. Gareth ‘Sing Song’ would like us to double our efforts, as there is always a lot to be done around the village. The only snag is the cost to the NHS with the extra prescriptions. A couple of members have been deemed good looking enough to attend the Silver Foxes coffee mornings which came as a surprise to the rest of us and a disappointment that we were not in the first draft, or second come to that!

Our next outing will be on Monday 8th August at the Community Centre at 9.30am.

We will be allowing carers along at the August meeting but not parole officers or your social worker

The Village Green and Memorial

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

THE VILLAGE GREEN AND MEMORIAL

On an absolutely beautiful morning we tidied up around the village green and memorial, where the beds we planted up for the Jubilee are looking good. Gareth sing song had to work twice as hard today because his gang was somewhat depleted as big John had to renew his pilot’s licence to help out the shortages in the aviation industry and bright Brian has been summoned to the Home Office. We will have to grill him on his return to get the gossip.

The next meeting will be on the 11th of July to clear overgrowth on Tarrws Lane and weed the border at the Community Centre.

Preparing For The Platinum Jubliee

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

THE TEAM PREPARE FOR THE PLATINUM JUBLIEE

The memorial soldier overseeing the planting up of flower beds in red, white and blue for the Jubilee.

Greenmoor Nursery in St Brides, Wentloog, gave us a huge discount and some free plants when he realised the work the team does and the quite unbelievable age of the personnel. Always a pleasure to go there; the plants are reasonable and in great condition.

We hope that you will enjoy this splash of colour to mark the Platinum Jubilee.

Burying A Time Capsule

BURYING A TIME CAPSULE

The Environment Group

The Environment Group will meet again on the 13th June and part of their work will involve burying a time capsule to celebrate the Jubilee. Team member Gareth ‘sing song’ will bring along some photographic plates of him performing at the palace, on the birth of Her Majesty.

A Glorious April Morning

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

On a glorious April morning the somewhat under strength team formed a couple of flower beds around the memorial stone in preparation to celebrate the Jubilee in June. The area will be planted up in royal colours hopefully at our next gathering; we will need to add some more soil to help make the beds visible from the road.

While digging our resident choirmaster Gareth sing song unearthed some interesting artefacts which are at least a hundred years old, We know this as one of the team who shall remain nameless said he remembered nicking the bottle from the back of the pub as a teenager. Now we know why he wears a Tag.

Our next meeting will be at the same venue on Monday May 9th at 9.30am.

If anyone has some red, white or blue bedding plants that would be great, thank you.

Conifers at the Community Centre

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

On Monday 14th March the team set about tidying up the front border and removing rubbish from under the hedge of the conifers at the Community Centre. A couple of members were absent. The usual reasons for not turning up are forgetting the day or not remembering where we are supposed to be working. This problem has now been resolved by Big John who has set up a What’s App group; the really old ones are being fitted with trackers by their carers. One member has a tracker on his ankle fitted by a government official, he claims it’s because they may need to contact him if an emergency arises!!

Next meeting – 11th April at 9.30 by the library.

The building on the immediate right is part of the Old School (the headmaster’s office), which is now the Com-munity Centre. Next door is the headmaster’s home followed by the old police house where the infamous Dai Cannon now resides.

Work Needs To Be Done

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

The orchid field has now been cut and we can see what work needs to be done. There are paths to keep clear, overgrowth along the boundary, cut material to be collected and burnt etc. If you would like to volunteer in helping to maintain the area please just turn up. We normally meet on the third Monday of the month from 9.30am but as this is Easter this month we will meet on 25th. You will need to provide your own tools, – gloves shears secateurs etc. and be responsible for your own safety

Surprised to See Big John

VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

On our February outing we were all quite surprised to see big John joining us. It is well known in Wenvoe that John doesn’t come out until Spring has sprung. He said the early daffodils had tricked him. Some of the team can be seen cutting overgrowth off the old wall on Walston Road; the other members are clearing up the waste which filled our trailer. There will be very little cutting back of any hedges from March as birds will be nesting. The team will be assisting in any way it can leading up to the Jubilee celebrations in June.

The next meeting will be on Monday 14th March at 9.30am outside the Community Centre
