Phil Morant Steps Down

As a result of the first heavy rain in weeks the team’s meeting on May 15 was cancelled. We’ll try again on June 12th.

The team will miss our founder/member Phil Morant who has decided to step down after years of faithful service. We are grateful for Phil’s dedication to making our village the pleasant environment in which we live. Thank you Phil from your team.

March Activities

A lovely morning in March and a good turnout for our team. We split the group with one half spending time at St Lythans pump area which was badly overgrown and 4 green bags were filled with debris – brambles, weeds etc. and more is waiting to be collected by one of us.

The other half of the team were busy forking the rose bed at the community centre.

Our next meeting will be on April 10th at 9.30 a.m.

In the meantime suggestions from the community as to possible future work for the team can be left for consideration in one of the What’s On boxes.

St Lythan’s Pump

The team met last month to discuss possible future projects and I have been approached to consider looking at the pump near St Lythans Church which is in need of attention. I’ve been up to have a look and indeed the area is sadly neglected and overgrown. I remember being involved in a clean up, but that was years ago. At our next meeting which will be on March 13 we will meet at the Community Centre and I suggest that some of the team visits the site to start clearing the area while others prepare the ground at the Village Green for new shrubs.

pansiesThe window boxes at the Community Centre have been cleared at last of summer bedding and filled with fresh compost ready for planting the usual winter polyanthuspansies and polyanthus. We also collected 6 bags of leaves in that area and still plenty to come down as there are on most of the trees in the village.

Our next meeting will be on the 12th December but probably we won’t meet in January.

September Activities

enviroment01The team met at the beginning of September to make a start on autumn jobs. The roses in the community centre beds have now been pruned back and this month we’ll deal with the village green rose beds. By this time most summer bedding will be finished and that will be cleared away ready to plant up with winter in mind

We’ll meet at the Community Centre on October 3rd and 17th at 9.30am.

The PCC has been kind enough to convey their sincere thanks to our group for the work we have carried out over the past few years in St. Mary’s churchyard. We are grateful for the acknowledgement.

However it would appear that the church wish to adopt a policy of the non-use of weedkiller around the trees. I would like to point out that the reason weedkiller is used around the base of ANY trees growing in grassed areas is to prevent serious damage to the bark from the use of strimmers which can lead to the eventual demise of the tree. I know this because I have seen it happen in my career in horticulture and arboriculture.

For this reason, Roundup is recommended in these circumstances but of course we will respect the wishes of the PCC in this matter.

Best Kept Village Competition

You will have read in the council notes, What's On March 16, that the Best Kept Village Competition will no longer take place. Interest and support have been dwindling for several years and with so few villages entering, there is little point in carrying on.

However our team will continue to keep Wenvoe clean and tidy for the benefit of us all with particular emphasis on the ongoing litter problem which continues to blight the road between the Walston Castle and Ruhr Cross.

Our work during March included pruning the roses on the village green and removing the accumulation of debris, mainly leaves left over from the autumn.

Next meeting Monday, April 18th at 9.30 a.m.
