We finished our meeting with strawberries and cream.

Wenvoe WI is 25 years old

Wenvoe WI is 25 years old this year and in Madeleine’s absence, vice president Margaret accepted two certificates on our behalf. One from NFWI was presented by Carol Atkinson, WI advisor, and the second from June Humphry, Federation secretary, was from GWFI.

Viv Truran who has spoken to us on many occasions, gave us an insight on how she started in the antiques business. It all came about with her decision to de-clutter her home. She sold some articles andenjoyed it so much that she was hooked, working in her spare time, together with her full-time job. After taking redundancy she sold antiques full-time. As always Viv donated her fee to our charity-this year Wales Air Ambulance.

We have received an invitation to the Link meeting at Penarth Conservative Club, June 16th at 2pm. The guest speaker will be John Sheen.

Several members enjoyed the social evening hosted by Culverhouse Cross WI and Pam and Lyn enjoyed the NFWI annual meeting held at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff

A summer lunch is –planned at the Wenvoe Arms for Tuesday August 7th at 12.30 pm. Menus will be available at our next meeting which will be on July 5th in the Church Hall at 7pm when Eva Leslie will be talking about “Crafty Surprises”.Visitors are welcome and with no charge.

Delegates will vote accordingly at national level this month.

The financial report was presented in June’s absence and as our retiring treasurer, we wish her well as she recovers from recent surgery. Secretary Pam gave a detailed and interesting report on our previous year.

The president’s address carried a “ Thank you Theme “ when Madeleine thanke committee members and all the WI ladies for all they had done and given to our institute, especially at those times in her absence, when everyone worked together to produce successful events. Madeleine also expressed her pleasure that after a few years, Pam Hodge has renewed her membership of our institute. It will be good to have her join us.

April Activities

As always all were made welcome by Madeleine at our April meeting, especially Pam Hodge, a former member who came as a visitor. We were pleased to see Pam and hope she will come again. We all send June, who is in hospital awaiting surgery, our good wishes for her future recovery.

An interesting evening was provided by Mansel Thomas who in addition to being a member of the Rotary Club of western Cardiff , is publicity officer, treasurer and website designer for the Rotary Doctor Bank, which was set up in Britain and northern Ireland, following great success in Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Germany. Mr Thomas’s talk with slides was excellent and informative. We learned that the UK has 1 doctor to 350 people, whereas in rural Africa that ratio is 1 doctor for 10 to 20,000 people. Rotary Doctor Bank is involved only with mission hospitals, mainly in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. 4th year medical students have visited these hospitals to work and also dentists. A major refurbishment has taken place at Kamuli hospital in Uganda. For further information visit www.Rotary Doctor BankGB and I.org

Members were thanked for the way they all came together on March 15th to celebrate our 15th anniversary. AS vice president, Margaret stepped in to chair the event and all visitors thoroughly enjoyed it all. Glamorgan Federation events were announced. May 14thsees Dinas Powys hosting the fashion show by Samantha B of Ewenny. We will next meet on May 3rd, which will be our annual meeting when the committee for 2018-2019 will be formed. In May we will also be voting on the resolution of Mental Health Matters and WI advisor, Carol Atkinson will be overseeing the proceeding.

For many years June has been our efficient, well-organised and dedicated treasurer, but sadly, due to ill health she has had to step down. Wde appreciate all the hard work she has done and we all wish her well on the road back to good health.

25th Anniversary Celebration

In Madeleine’s absence, vice president Margaret welcomed members and guests to our 25th anniversary celebration party on March 15th, postponed from March 1st. Members from Dinas Powys, Culverhouse Cross and Penarth institutes joined us, together with Carol Atkinson, June Humphrey and Helen, who has made our lovely banner. There was a silver and Welsh theme, with silver tableware, music, daffodils and a Welsh quiz. Everyone had fun trying to link up childhood photos of our committee with the right member. The banner was launched during this important occasion and we had a wonderful buffet with a delicious cake, made and decorated by Natalie, Lyn’s daughter in law

WI business included plans for the literary lunch in Porthcawl on March 22nd and the holiday to Norwich at the end of the year.

Next month’s speaker is Mansel Thomas on the Rotary Doctor Bank – a good follow up to last years talk by Keith Moger on the history of Cardiff hospitals. Guests are most welcome. Madeleine’s letter to all members is printed in this month’s magazine.

February Report

The president welcomed our new member, Maureen. We were all delighted to hear that Mair is making good progress and so is Eira. They are hoping to join us on March 1st. Our speaker was Janet Young who spoke about ‘The Glorious Reign’ ie the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, who was the second daughter of King Henry VIII. We learnt about the various plots and conspiracies during her reign – there were six serious attempts to Walter kill Elizabeth herself. Elizabeth ruled wisely and set about re-establishing the Protestant faith with great determination. The Elizabethan age was one of great adventure and included Sir Raileigh bringing back potatoes from America.

Members were reminded of the coffee morning in Dinas Powys on February 24th and the lunch at the High Tide , Porthcawl on March 22nd. Our banner is ready for its launch at our 25th Anniversary party on March 1st. Members were thanked for their donations towards the party buffet.

January News

At our first meeting of the new year our speaker was Rosemary Scadden whose talk was devoted to various tricks with scarves. We had brought scarves with us and we were shown many ways of folding them and we tried to copy them.

Thanks were expressed to Margaret and Pam E for taking part at Wenvk community carol service and the Social Link carol service. Our attention as drawn to various future events within the Glamorgan Federation. We hope to support the literary lunch at the High Tide, Porthcawl on March 22nd. Interested members should bring 312. 00 to our February meeting. We voted on our Resolution and our choices will be forwarded to Federation House Our banner is on its way

Next month’s speaker is Janet Young and her talk is entitled “ Plots and Conspiracies “ All guests are welcome, free of charge.

December Meeting Report

At our December meeting members were delighted by the return of Betty and to see Maureen. A reminder was given of the carol service at St. Mary’s and of the Link carol service at Dinas Powys.

Work on our banner is ongoing and we hope it will be completed by our 25th celebration on 1st March when we meet.

Madeleine was honoured to have placed a wreath on our behalf at the village Cenotaph on Armistice Sunday.

We received a letter from Patricia Coulthard, thanking the branch for our donation to the local branch of the National Autistic Society. Our charity for 2018 is Wales Air Ambulance.

The latter part of the evening was in party mood with Madeleine and Janet providing entertainment and we heard “Whatever happened to Christmas, (printed in What’s On some years ago.) And we once again related and agreed with its contents. Pam supplied a quiz and we enjoyed searching for the answers while enjoying our party buffet

Our first meeting of the New Year is on January 4th in the church hall when we will be voting on our resolutions and subs of £41,00 for the calendar year are due. It would be an advantage to our treasurer if members could put money or cheques payable to Wenvoe. The subject is to be “How will I fold my scarf” and members are asked to bring along a scarf to join in. Visitors will be welcome.

The president and committee wish all members and their families good health for the coming year

The October Meeting

Everyone was welcomed to our October meeting with a special mention of visitor Maureen who we hope will come again to future meetings.

Our speaker was Patricia Coulthard who has worked on the “ All Wales Autism Strategy “ and helped to set up the “ Cardiff & Vale National Autistic Society Support Group “for parents and carers. Patricia, a PhD in Autism and with the aid of slides, provided us with an informative presentation on “Autism- Different Ways of Being”. Children can be seven or more years old before a diagnosis is made and being unable to take multiple instructions, don’t see the world as we do. Patricia brought along Linda whose son is autistic but has just started studying for a Master’s degree. Madeleine presented them with our donation to their support group.

Members have been invited to the Link Carol Service at Dinas Powys at on Dec. 14th at 7 pm. Please give your names at our Nov meeting.
