Little Hamston<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n For Howard Bevan<\/p>\n The surge of green that overruns<\/p>\n the kitchen garden, where it rests<\/p>\n between hawthorn and stone, maroons<\/p>\n the swimming orchard’s sharp harvest.<\/p>\n Green shade, where the last bee drones,<\/p>\n slows the chariot wings, compressed<\/p>\n behind the brazen honeycombs<\/p>\n and Time is stilled, and quiet, blessed.<\/p>\n Welsh slates on the long roof leaden.<\/p>\n Sky curves over dappled gauze.<\/p>\n Nest-filled creepers draw a sudden<\/p>\n blaze of carmine curtains closed.<\/p>\n Though September doors stand open<\/p>\n the parlour flickers, fire on brass.<\/p>\n Flagstones warm, tomatoes ripen<\/p>\n all along the window glass.<\/p>\n The old man sips his evening tipple,<\/p>\n solves another crossword clue,<\/p>\n resting at the oaken table<\/p>\n worn by generations, who<\/p>\n drew their days from crop and stubble,<\/p>\n flock and herd, from morning dew<\/p>\n to twilight’s fall on sty and stable,<\/p>\n Seasons turn and turn anew.<\/p>\n Little Hamston, little jewel<\/p>\n set aside from crowd and noise;<\/p>\n spirit’s strength and soul’s renewal,<\/p>\n all our senseless rush defies.<\/p>\n Good folk, self-sufficient, loyal<\/p>\n follow here their daily lives<\/p>\n In narrow acres, wed to soil,<\/p>\n yet comprehend God’s wider skies.<\/p>\n \u00a9 Kay Rowe May 2008<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Kay visited the late Howard Bevan at Little Hamston, a property in Dyffryn, between 1990 and 2008 and wrote this poem about September.
