{"id":6537,"date":"2019-08-28T23:48:13","date_gmt":"2019-08-28T22:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wenvoe.org.uk\/?p=6537"},"modified":"2019-08-28T23:48:13","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T22:48:13","slug":"a-poem-for-for-howard-bevan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wenvoe.org.uk\/?p=6537","title":{"rendered":"A Poem for For Howard Bevan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Little Hamston<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For Howard Bevan<\/p>\n<p>The surge of green that overruns<\/p>\n<p>the kitchen garden, where it rests<\/p>\n<p>between hawthorn and stone, maroons<\/p>\n<p>the swimming orchard&#8217;s sharp harvest.<\/p>\n<p>Green shade, where the last bee drones,<\/p>\n<p>slows the chariot wings, compressed<\/p>\n<p>behind the brazen honeycombs<\/p>\n<p>and Time is stilled, and quiet, blessed.<\/p>\n<p>Welsh slates on the long roof leaden.<\/p>\n<p>Sky curves over dappled gauze.<\/p>\n<p>Nest-filled creepers draw a sudden<\/p>\n<p>blaze of carmine curtains closed.<\/p>\n<p>Though September doors stand open<\/p>\n<p>the parlour flickers, fire on brass.<\/p>\n<p>Flagstones warm, tomatoes ripen<\/p>\n<p>all along the window glass.<\/p>\n<p>The old man sips his evening tipple,<\/p>\n<p>solves another crossword clue,<\/p>\n<p>resting at the oaken table<\/p>\n<p>worn by generations, who<\/p>\n<p>drew their days from crop and stubble,<\/p>\n<p>flock and herd, from morning dew<\/p>\n<p>to twilight&#8217;s fall on sty and stable,<\/p>\n<p>Seasons turn and turn anew.<\/p>\n<p>Little Hamston, little jewel<\/p>\n<p>set aside from crowd and noise;<\/p>\n<p>spirit&#8217;s strength and soul&#8217;s renewal,<\/p>\n<p>all our senseless rush defies.<\/p>\n<p>Good folk, self-sufficient, loyal<\/p>\n<p>follow here their daily lives<\/p>\n<p>In narrow acres, wed to soil,<\/p>\n<p>yet comprehend God&#8217;s wider skies.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a9 Kay Rowe May 2008<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kay visited the late Howard Bevan at Little Hamston, a property in Dyffryn, between 1990 and 2008 and wrote this poem about September.
