\n\t100 YEARS SINCE THE GUNS FELL SILENT<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t\"\"The Wenvoe War Memorial lists 74 men who took part in the Great War (1914-1918). 12 died and 62 returned to the village. The memorial was designed by William Clarke who was a resident in Wenvoe. The carboniferous limestone used was extracted from the Alps Quarry. Construction was complete by mid November 1919 at a cost of £289:11:4. The names of those killed in World War II were added later.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat passing-bells for these who die as cattle?<\/span><\/em>\"\" <\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tOnly the monstrous anger of the guns. <\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tOnly the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle <\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tCan patter out their hasty orisons.<\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tNo mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells; <\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tNor any voice of mourning save the choirs, <\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;<\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd bugles calling for them from sad shires. <\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat candles may be held to speed them all? <\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tNot in the hands of boys, but in their eyes <\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tShall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes. <\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall; <\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tTheir flowers the tenderness of patient minds, <\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.<\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n
