\nHarper Lee wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning novel
\nTo Kill a Mockingbird in 1960 which became a
\nclassic of modern American literature and went onto
\nbecome an iconic film starring Gregory Peck.
\nFollowing its publication, Harper Lee was subjected
\nto a whirlwind of publicity tours which she found
\ndifficult. It remained her only published work until
\n2015.
\nLee is reported to have said in 2011 that there were
\ntwo reasons that she never wrote again; \u201cOne, I
\nwouldn\u2019t go through the pressure and publicity I
\nwent through with To Kill a Mockingbird for any
\namount of money. Second, I have said what I
\nwanted to say and I will not say it again.\u201d She died
\nin 2016.
\nTo Kill A Mocking Bird remained her only
\npublished work until Go Set a Watchman was published in 2015. It is understood that
\nshe didn\u2019t want the book to be published.
\nIt was therefore with interest that the Page Turners
\ngroup read Go Set a Watchman. The book contains
\nversions of many characters from To Kill a
\nMockingbird although it is set some years in the
\nfuture when Scout is a young adult and returns to her
\nchildhood home town. The book was completed in
\n1957, although it has been published as a separate
\npiece of work.
\nNearly all members of the group were very
\ndisappointed in the book feeling that it was very
\nmuch a first draft and was a series of disjointed
\nthoughts and ideas. It was difficult to read it as a
\nstand alone book without comparing it with To Kill
\na Mockingbird.
\nThe book received an overall score of 4.<\/p>\n
