\"\"We are often asked about the effects of artificial
\nlawns on wildlife. The benefits in terms of
\nmaintenance etc. are understood and promoted in
\nadvertising by plastic grass suppliers. However
\nrecently the Royal Horticultural Society published
\nan article summarising the less welcome effects
\nthese can have on our flowers, birds and bees. Fake
\nlawns can contaminate the soil and surrounding
\nwatercourses with micro-plastics. Real grass stores
\ncarbon but with artificial grass the soil is dug up and
\nreplaced with chippings or other crushed material.
\nGrass and soil will help to keep a garden cooler
\nthrough evaporation but plastic grass can get much
\nhotter and cause problems for the sensitive paws of
\nhousehold pets. Plastic grass provides no habitat for
\nwildlife and the lack of worms and insects leaves
\nnothing for our wild birds to feed on. False grass
\nneeds replacing after some years and the old
\nmaterial ends up
\nas landfill. And
\nyou cannot make
\na daisy chain
\nwith plastic
\nlawns! So, if you
\nhave or are
\nconsidering
\nreplacing your
\ngrass with
\nplastic, make
\nsure you take
\naccount of the
\nadverse effects
\nthis can have on
\nyour garden
