Update from Councillor Russell Godfrey

Update from your Vale of Glamorgan Councillor Russell Godfrey

On the 20th January we had the induction session at the outdoor exercise equipment at Station Road Playing Fields, which was attended by our MP Alun Cairns and many members of the Wenvoe Community. A good and informative time was had by all. Just to remind you tennis rackets and tennis balls are available for loan from the Wenvoe Library.

The new fencing around the Tennis Courts should be completed by the beginning of March.

On the Weekend of 3rd & 4th February, 8 drain covers were stolen along Old Port Road (38 across the Vale) these have now been replaced by the VOG.

We also appear to be experiencing an increase in Fly Tipping in the area. Can I please ask that if you see any suspicious activity, that you try to get a vehicle registration number (if applicable) and report it to either the Police or if applicable the VOG Council or myself.

The installation of the Toucan Crossing at the Walston Castle is now well under way. I have also been informed that the new Care Home on Port Road is planning to open in March.

I would also like to welcome the new owners to our Village Shop and to say farewell to Anwar and his family (although I believe they are continuing to live in the village).

If you have any issues/suggestions please do not hesitate to contact me or pop along to one of my monthly surgeries. On the third Saturday of every Month between 10am & 11am

Wenvoe What’s On Annual Subscription

WENVOE WHAT’S ON ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION

The purpose of Wenvoe What’s On is to provide information, news, and entertainment for the resi-dents of Wenvoe. To do this, we charge subscribers and advertisers enough to cover the cost of printing. All other work is done by volunteers. The sales price for the magazine has not changed for many years, but the disruption caused by the pandemic and the increased cost of printing the What’s On has stretched our limited resources.

We have reluctantly decided therefore to increase the price for advertising, as well as the sales price. The April issue will be delivered with envelopes as usual, asking for subscriptions for the 2024/25 year. We are asking for £3 for 12 issues, delivered, in-stead of £2.

We hope that you will find this reasonable, and that you will continue to support our magazine, and to contribute to its content.

FUTURE OF ST BLEDDIAN’S CHURCH

MEETING ABOUT THE FUTURE of St Bleddian’s Church in St Lythans

Thursday, October 12th, 2023 at 7pm

at St Bleddian’s Church in St Lythans

St Bleddian’s is a special place on a site that has been a sacred gathering place for millennia. The church has a faithful, but small, congregation.

Sadly, expenses are more than income and there is likely more than £50,000 of repairs required in order to maintain the building for use.

Therefore, we are inviting all who are interested in the future of St Bleddian’s to gather to hear an update on the financial picture and to explore ideas and possibilities for ensuring the future use of this sacred place.

CAN YOU HELP YOUR LOCAL MAGAZINE?

CAN YOU HELP YOUR LOCAL MAGAZINE?

Would you like to join the What’s On production team? We are looking for 2 or 3 local people to as-sist us with the work involved in producing the village magazine.

If you are a person with good computer skills who would enjoy assembling the magazine ready for printing, we would love to hear from you. This would require a few days commitment around the 18th of the month. At the moment, there are two of us sharing the task. A third team member would be very welcome, and would give us added flexibility to support each other at holiday times etc.

If you are a person with good communication skills and would like to share the task of sending in-voices to businesses/individuals who currently advertise in the magazine, as well as helping to generate new advertisers, we would love to hear from you. We also need help with distribution of the magazine and with magazine income and expenses.

Alternatively, if you would like to help out on a more ad hoc basis, say to cover a deliver’s absence or holiday, then please also get in touch.

The magazine is a village production with most material provided by local residents. Could you pro-vide a regular column on a subject that interests you and others? It could be a monthly or bi-monthly item or even a quarterly piece. We are always looking for stand-alone articles.

Ross has written the front cover of the What’s On for a number of years and whilst he will continue to do so for the time being, we would also like to hear from you if you would like to write a feature for the front page, on an ad hoc or regular basis or an idea for a feature aricle.

Please contact any of the team members if interested. Our contact details can be found at the top of page 2. of the What’s On magazine

Revive the Village Carnival

WENVOE FESTIVAL

You may have read in last month’s What’s On that the Community Council have discussed a proposal to revive the Village Carnival which was last held in the 1980s. We have established a committee to take this forward with the aim of holding the event over a weekend next July. In view of the cost and difficulty of obtaining permissions to close Port Road to allow a procession to cross to the sports field, we consider it would be more practical to hold the whole event in the field.

Early suggestions envisage a funfair together with sporting events for young and old. Live music including an evening barn dance and some possible talent competitions. Craft exhibitions and, of course, eating and drinking facilities. Hopefully a number, if not all, of the village groups and organisations will wish to take part.

Our next meeting to discuss all of this will be held in the Community Centre at 7.00pm on Thursday 8th December and anyone who is interested is welcome to join us. If you are unable to make this date or just want to talk it through, please feel free to give me a ring. Colin Thomas on 07776134337.

No Scout Post Again This Year

SCOUT CHRISTMAS POST AND WENVOE SCOUTS

We are sad to notify you that there will be no Scout Post again this year. Work is still progressing to try and restart it for next year. However, it is a major project and requires all parts of Cardiff and Vale Scouts to be in a position to collect, sort and deliver the cards.

Wenvoe Scouts has been going from strength to strength since the restrictions of the pandemic have been lifted. We now have 3 very active sections – Beavers (6-8 yrs), Cubs (8-10 ½ yrs) and Scouts (10 ½-14 yrs).

You may have seen our young people and leaders taking part in the Wenvoe Remembrance Sunday Parade. They were well turned out and organised. I was very proud of them all.

Scouts is a world wide movement for boys and girls. It enables them to make new friends and have amazing adventures while learning new skills and having fun. The younger ones do lots of craft and play games helping prepare them for more adventurous activities including hiking, camping, climbing, abseiling and swimming. They develop dreams which may take them into a future of work and play or just into the District Explorers (14-18 yrs) and Network (18-25 yrs) or on to the role of a Scout Leader.

Some areas are now starting Squirrels for the 4-6 year olds and we have dreams of that too, but need

extra help before we can expand. All leaders are trained and we take safety seriously. If you or anyone you know would like to help by becoming a leader, please contact me.

Big dreams cost money and require volunteer leaders to organise weekly meeting, outings and camps and ensure that the young people are safe while they have fun. We do need additional equipment. Some of this is expensive. If, in lieu of buying stamps you would like to donate to Wenvoe Scouts you can do this via https://www. justgiving.com/firstwenvoescouts.

To add a child to our waiting list please email 1stwenvoe.join@penarthanddistrict.or.uk with the name and DOB of child

We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

Thank you,

Jane Fenton-May, Chair Wenvoe Scout Group
