On our February outing we were all quite surprised to see big John joining us. It is well known in Wenvoe that John doesn’t come out until Spring has sprung. He said the early daffodils had tricked him. Some of the team can be seen cutting overgrowth off the old wall on Walston Road; the other members are clearing up the waste which filled our trailer. There will be very little cutting back of any hedges from March as birds will be nesting. The team will be assisting in any way it can leading up to the Jubilee celebrations in June.

The next meeting will be on Monday 14th March at 9.30am outside the Community Centre

November Activities

---

The team were summoned twice in November.

On November 1st the team put up the Tommy statue at the memorial.

On November 8th the team tackled the untidiness at the entrance to Clos Llanfair. During the morning, Brian tried to explain the workings of the Hadron Collider, but he had us going round in circles.

It was Gareth’s birthday and so Glenys had made a cake. Gareth himself had brought along some dubious French drink and after sampling a drop, the hedge looked like the spire of Chesterfield Church of St Mary’s!

The team will meet for the last time this year on December 13th, at the end of Walston Road by the footpath at 9.30am.

The Environment Team give up their free time to help in a small way to keep Wenvoe a nice place to live in. We would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas.

Where to start…. A small contingent set off for the cenotaph and cut back the hedge. Dedication is a big plus with this group as shown by Brian, who delayed his wild water swimming, and Ieuan, who astounded the doctors by recovering in double quick time to be ready for duty.

The main group finished off the work from last month on Pound Lane. We were assisted by Tall Tony who joined the team today. Martin went out early to clear a path for the rest of us. Gareth meanwhile kept losing his equipment in the triangle. Alan and Big John have done many tours with the working party, so nothing phases them. Ian made sure that the area was ship-shape before allowing us to go.

This eclectic team of volunteers have for years tried to make a difference by tidying up around the village. The team meets on the second Monday of each month. Wenvoe has grown a lot over the years so, even if you can’t make the days when we meet, anything you can do to help improve your surroundings will benefit everyone. Litter pickers were out in force during early August so hats off to everyone; it can be a thankless task.

Our next meeting will be on 13th Sept at 9.30. We will meet on the village green where we will prioritise what needs doing. At present our main areas of concern are footpaths leading to the playing fields, the border in front of the community centre and bamboo in the cemetery

On a miserable July morning the team were joined by Lowri, pictured here with her dad. They set about clearing the pavement that runs down alongside the old quarry road. Lowri showing true team spirit having travelled down from London to help.

At the other end of the village team B started work on the Wenvoe triangle at the bottom of Pound Lane. Like the Bermuda triangle team members in the past have gone in there and not come out. A lot more work is needed here, so if team members could meet there on Monday 9th August at 9.30 that would be great

A lovely June morning had the group raring to go. With Martin making his debut, after we checked his birth certificate to make sure he was of a certain age as not show us up. Four of us tackled weeds in the rose border on the village green, while the others who don’t suffer from vertigo set about clearing ivy off a wall. For the second month running one of the team went missing, this time on the way from his home. We have had a quick look for Ieuan (see photo), to no avail.

Our next meeting will be on 12th July at 9.30. The teams will tackle the path leading to Greave Close via Walston Road and the triangle at the bottom of Pound Lane.

The gregarious seven tackled an overgrown area at the top of Walston Road. One of the team found metal discarded in a hedge. There is no need to bother throwing metal away, just leave it outside your house and it will soon disappear.

We welcomed a new member, Gareth, into our midst. One of his tasks was to find big John who disappeared; he is still missing as this is being written!

Never mind, the rest of us will congregate on the village green at 9.30am on Monday 14th June.

On a lovely December morning the Environment team met up on the village green to plant daffodil bulbs donated by Dyffryn gardens. A great turnout for the final meeting of the year; thankfully Ieuan turned up to bring the average age down a notch. Our next outing will be on the 11th January back at the village green at 9.30. Busy Despite the Lockdown

Despite lockdown we have managed to keep very busy.

A very pleasant sunny day in November saw a good number of volunteers out at the top of the Orchid Field with strimmers, shears, secateurs, loppers, saws etc to tackle the ever encroaching brambles, blackthorn, ash and other growth.

Our latest conservation session went well as we cleared brambles and other vegetation under the trees. We are also clearing brambles around some of the trees planted in the last few years including Hornbeam, Elm, Wild Pear, Yew and the Checkers Tree.

Within a couple of hours of work piles of cut material appeared around the field’s perimeter and areas of long hidden ground started to see sunlight once again. Even the robin arrived to inspect the work.

A Tree leaflet has been prepared and will be available from leaflet dispensers once we have finished refurbishing the main notice board. There are 22 tree species on the list and a further 7 will be planted in the coming weeks. Some are easy to identify (e.g. Oak and Ash), others more tricky such as Alder Buckthorn and Wild Pear.

 

The working group meeting is planned for Wednesday 16th December from 9.30am. All are welcome to join us in the task of clearing, please bring your own tools and gloves.

We have received another donated bench which has been refurbished and will be sited at the Goldsland Orchard. Yet another has been offered which will make 4 donated in the last few months. So for us Christmas came early but we know they are much appreciated by visitors to our sites. Work continues at the Bee Loud Glade where we have planted a hedgerow with over 100 saplings donated by the Woodland Trust. Plantings of flora good for pollinators include Bulbs (Daffodils, Camassia, Scilla, Chionodoxa), Evening Primrose, Caryopteris, Salvia, Wall Germander, Purple Loosestrife. A new leaflet is available from the Bee Loud Glade dispenser listing plants which you can consider for your garden which are good for pollinators.

We are on the hunt for any mouse litter, that is, what you remove when you clear out their cages. Bumblebees often nest in old mice-holes and are believed to be able to pick up the scent so popping some into nest-boxes can often result in the bees moving in. So if you have any spare, do get in touch with a Wildlife Group member.
